Men's Soccer Clinches 7th NEC Regular Season Championship Sunday

Note: The story was published prior to the completion of NEC matches with implications in the league table. This story was originally posted with the headline of "Knights, Terriers Split Points Sunday"

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - FDU men's soccer clinched the seventh Northeast Conference Regular Season Championship in program history Sunday and remained unbeaten in NEC play following the side's scoreless draw at St. Francis Brooklyn, the first meeting between the two sides since last season's NEC tournament semifinal. The Knights (7-5-3, 5-0-2 NEC) have locked in the number one seed and a bye to the semifinal for the upcoming NEC tournament.

How It Happened

First Half
  • FDU's back four were magnificent in the fixture with FDU allowing just three shots-on-target, all of which were saved by senior goalkeeper Spencer King.
  • The league's saves leader made a stellar stop on the first on-target attempt by the Terriers at Brooklyn Bridge Park, diving to his right to prevent the opening score in the 35'.
  • Seth Roland's side would get cooking down the stretch of the opening half with sophomore forward Kevin Leonhard logging the Knights' first shot on goal in the 37', followed closely after by a try off the boot of junior Jayd Hamdaoua down the center of the goal.
Second Half
  • The Burgundy and Blue got off to a fast start to open the second half with senior Jordan Alonge striking from the midfield, missing left just over 10 minutes after the halftime break.
  • Though the Knights would not long a shot-on-target in the final 45, the side posted four attempts.
  • King would be tested twice making the save both times.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn was called offsides in the 88' setting up a crucial free kick for FDU, though nothing would develop down the stretch.

Quotable

"I'm proud of the guys for clinching the 2022 NEC Regular Season title with today's draw," said Roland, "We would've preferred the win of course, but our goal was to get back on the bus after the game with the regular season trophy in hand and we achieved that. It was a pretty even game and St. Francis [Brooklyn] is a very solid team. We competed with a focused and determined mentality and the guys have worked very hard to earn the honor of being the regular season champs."

The Road Ahead

FDU hits the road for their final regular season match of the season on Sunday, October 30 at NEC associate member Howard with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on NEC Front Row from our nation's capital. The semifinal match will be played November 10 at University Stadium against the lowest seed remaining after the opening round, scheduled to be conducted on November 6.
