Men's Volleyball Falls in Four Sets in Inaugural Match

HACKENSACK, N.J. - Tuesday night FDU kicked off their first-ever men's volleyball match at the Stratis Arena. Director of Athletics Bradford Hurlbut, FDU President Christopher Capuano and NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris were honored to present the game ball. The Knights (0-1) fell short and lost to LIU in four sets (1-4).

Inside the Box Score

  • Freshman and Outside Hitter Jack Lydon led the Knights, tallying 17.5 points with 15 kills, three blocks, and a service ace.

  • Recording 11 kills in the final two sets, freshman Lorenzo Bonomo helped guide the Knights with 14 points. Bonomo posted a total of 13 kills on a team-high .320 clip.

  • Graduate student Rui Fernandes recorded FDU men's volleyball first-ever double-double, anchoring the Knights with 28 assists and 13 digs. Fernandes also contributed four kills, a service ace, and a pair of blocks to FDU's cause.

How it Happened

  • The Sharks served first and held control to drop the Knights 25-16 in a faulty first set.

  • Set two began in a tight battle, with neither team holding more than a three-point lead to 14. On a 5-1 run, the Sharks broke open a gap that they would maintain to drop FDU in the set, 25-20.

  • The Burgundy and Blue bounced back in the third set. After a back-and-forth start, FDU built a 15-11 cushion. LIU rallied with a 5-1 run to draw within a point, but the Knights would go on from there to win 9 of the following 12 points to secure the first set win in school history, 25-18.

  • In set four, the Knights came out hot on a 7-2 run with a service ace by freshman Jael Deveaux. The Knights could not sustain the momentum. The Sharks dished out four service aces to knot the score. The teams traded points to 26, but a final pair of attacks by LIU's Caden Satterfield sealed the decision in favor of the Sharks ending the last set 26-28.
