Women's Volleyball Falls to LIU in Conference Opener

HACKENSACK, N.J. - Women's volleyball fell to LIU in five sets on Friday in the Rothman Center in the first conference match of the season.

 

Inside the Box Score

  • Four Knights posted double-doubles on the night, including Hannah Schmidt, Miriam Stingl, Madisyn Beirne and Magdalena Maksimović. Beirne led the way with 16 kills for 17.5 points.

  • Graduate student Alix Christie fueled FDU on both sides of the ball. Contributing 15.5 points, Christie recorded five blocks, two service aces and 10 kills for a .381 clip. 
  • Maksimović notched her 600th career kill, recording 10 attacks along with a season-high 16 digs and three blocks.
 

How it Happened

  • Set one was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team holding more than a three point lead. Three Knights hit over a .333 clip, including Christie who tallied three kills for a perfect 1.000 average. With 17 kills, the Sharks fell 25-23.

  • FDU jumped to a 5-2 lead off a four-point run early in the second set. The Sharks worked to close the gap, knotting the score at 23. With a final pair of blocks, LIU took the set 25-23.

  • The Knights took control early in set three with a 17-11 advantage. Holding the Sharks to a .105 clip with a pair of blocks by Christie, FDU secured the set 25-17.

  • The fourth set was a tight battle from start to finish. With 17 kills, the Sharks topped the Knights 25-20.

  • The fifth set was another tight contest, with both teams notching back-to-back kills and hitting over a .350 clip. After jumping to a 4-0 lead, the Knights could not hold on, falling 18-16 in the final set.

The Knights return to the Rothman tomorrow at 4 p.m. to take on St. Francis Brooklyn in the second conference game of the season.
