Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

In Tale of Two Halves, Knights Fall to Hofstra 3-2

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (2-5-1, 0-0-0 NEC) fell to Hofstra (6-1-0, 1-1-0 CAA) 3-2 on Tuesday night in the non-conference finale for the Burgundy and Blue.

How it Happened

  • Hofstra got on the board in the 18' following an own goal scored by the Knights.
  • The Pride would strike again in the first half with their second goal coming in the 34' by Matthew Vowinkel on a pass from Hendrik Hebbeker in the 34'.
  • Stefan Mason would score the third goal for the home side in the 48'. He was assisted Storm Strongin to make it a 3-0 lead for the Pride.
  • On a free kick that landed straight in the net, FDU senior Diego Arribas tacked on his third goal of the season to make cut the Hofstra lead down to 3-1 in the 56'.
  • Arribas would score again on a penalty kick following a handball in the box in the 74' to make it a 3-2 tally.

Inside the Box Score

  • FDU turned up the heat in the final 45, firing off a total of seven shots in the second half of play, compared to just two in the first half.
  • Redshirt-junior Spencer King earned the start and recorded four saves - one more than that of the Pride keeper.
  • Arribas' brace is his first since October 26, 2019 at home against St. Francis Brooklyn in NEC play, a 4-3 overtime win for FDU.
  • The Madrid, Spain native's three shots-on-target were the most of any Knight in the fixture.
Coach Roland's Thoughts

"That was definitely a game of two halves. We were like spectators in the first half simply admiring how good they were - and boy were they good. But we did little to change the trajectory of their dominance until we made some changes in the lineup. Then, we were like a completely different team in the second half scoring goals, creating chances and defending with more energy; but it wasn't enough. With NEC play starting on Sunday, we need to find solutions to our inconsistency quickly so that we can play a solid, complete game from start to finish."

What's Next

FDU will play host to Sacred Heart in the side's first Northeast Conference match of the fall 2021 season on Sunday, September 26, at 7 p.m. at University Stadium in Teaneck live on NEC Front Row.

The 2021 men's soccer season is presented by Bogota Savings Bank.
