Men's Soccer Falls to Cornell 3-1

TEANECK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (2-4-1, 0-0-0 NEC) fell to Cornell (4-1-0, 0-0-0 Ivy) on Saturday by a 3-1 tally in the final non-conference home fixture of the fall 2021 season.

How it Happened

  • Cornell's Tyler Bagley - the reigning United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week - opened the scoring affair with a 13' unassisted goal.
  • Not even seven minutes later, Big Red's Harry Fuller was fouled in the box and took a penalty kick in the 20' which he converted for his side's second goal of the fixture.
  • In the 62' Knights senior Diego Arribas bagged a pass from sophomore Tony Gomez to cut the deficit in half.
  • Assisted by Charles Touche in the 75', Emeka Eneli scored the third and final goal for the road side to seal the deal on their 3-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Both sides recorded an even eight shots.
  • FDU goalkeeper Spencer King finished with two saves, the same mark as the Big Red goalie.
  • Arribas logged a team-high four shots, including his second goal of the season.
Coach Roland's Thoughts
"Cornell was everything I expected them to be—relentless, dangerous, disciplined and exhausting to play against. I thought we came out slowly and paid the price by going down two goals at the half. I thought our response after halftime was much better and we had several chances to get back in the game and eventually did with a good counterattack from Tony [Gomez] to Diego [Arribas] for a nice goal. Down 2-1, we kept the tempo high and kept pushing for the equalizer. Unfortunately, we allowed a third goal which was what Cornell needed. In the end I thought we competed hard, but need to sharpen up as we head into the start of NEC play after Tuesday's game against a Hofstra team that's 5-1 to start the season."
