Calzola's Second Half Score Proves to Be Difference; Pushes Knights to 1-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0) defeated Army (1-1-0, 0-0-0) 1-0 on Monday night, giving the Knights their first win of the fall 2021 campaign.

How it Happened

  • Following lightning and inclement weather in the area, kickoff was delayed nearly an hour and a half.
  • FDU earned a crucial advantage early in the fixture as the Black Knights' Bradley Schweickert was sent off in the 19' following a straight red card, giving the Burgundy and Blue a one-man edge.
  • The first half saw the Knights outshoot the home side by a 6-1 mark.
  • Junior Edoardo Calzola scored his first goal for the Knights at Army, breaking the draw in the 53'.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sophomore Jeremy Opong and senior Noah Chia each finished with two shots on goal
  • Calzola's goal is the fifth in his intercollegiate career (four at Central Arkansas)
  • R-Junior Spencer King earned his first start of the season
Coach Roland's Thoughts

"Wow, what a game. Whenever you play Army you know you better be prepared for a knock-down, drag-out battle - and it was exactly that. We competed hard, played good soccer, got solid goalkeeping and scored a great goal. Ideal [Shefqeti] did a great job setting the tone from the beginning that we were going to go nose-to-nose with them and not back down. We got good performances from all the starters and the reserves, as well. It was a very gratifying win."
