Softball Drops Both Games in Home Opening Series Against CCSU

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (0-8, 0-6 NEC) played its first two home games of the 2021 season, but fell 3-2 in a close game one and 13-3 in six innings in game two to Central Connecticut State (8-5, 6-0 NEC) on Friday afternoon from the FDU Softball Field.

In game one, junior Alayna Savaglio pitched 5.1 innings and registered a career-high 11 strikeouts while only allowing three runs on five hits. Sophomore Cassidy Triska belted her first homer of the season and second of her career with a two-run shot that also scored graduate student Summer Mendoza in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In game two, graduate student Madison Emerson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning that brought in junior Courtney Mahoney. The homer was Emerson's second of the year. Savaglio drove in the other FDU run with a single to center field that brought Triska home.

Coach Foye's Thoughts
"Maddie continues to show why she is the best hitter on our team. She had a few tough at-bats today and you could tell she was eager for a hit, but instead of panicking she stuck with her usual great approach at the plate and was able to finish off the day with a HR." Cassidy has really turned it on at the plate of late after a slow start so we decided to move her up in the order. She hit a huge 2 run HR to cut the deficit to 1 in the first game to give us a chance to tie or win."

"Summer was fantastic again today on the bases. She turned two base hits into doubles with her hustle and her double in the first game helped get Cassidy to the plate for her two- run HR to give us a chance to win game one." Alayna is still going strong in the circle as she has been the best pitcher in our rotation. We just need the defense behind her to be a little more consistent and we would have few more scoreless innings with better chances to win."

Game 1: CCSU 3, FDU 2
How it Happened
  • CCSU opened the game with a run in the first inning off an RBI double, but Savaglio was able to get out of a jam that saw runners on first and second with a strikeout.
  • Sophomore Hailey Ramberg recorded FDU's first hit of the day in the bottom of the second inning with a hit through the left side of the infield, but was left on first base.
  • After Savaglio stuck out the side in the top of the second and three batters as well in the third to total all six of her outs via the strikeout, with all six going down swinging.
  • Savaglio then set CCSU down in order in the top of the fourth and FDU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with a heads-up base running play from Mendoza and a walk and hit by pitch, but FDU was set down to end the inning.
  • After a scoreless fifth inning, the Blue Devils added two runs to their lead 3-0, but Triska then launched a homer over the wall in the bottom of the sixth as FDU pulled within one run.
  • Sophomore Malori Bell walked to open the final frame, but CCSU's defense registered a nice play to get two outs and got a final one to win game one.
Game 2: CCSU 13, FDU 3 (F/6)
How it Happened
  • The Blue Devils opened game two with a two-run homer to left center to take an early lead, but Savaglio cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to center field to score Triska.
  • FDU had runners on first and second in the bottom of inning number two, but CCSU turned a double play to end the inning.
  • CCSU added five more runs to its lead between the third and fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-1, including back-to-back homers before graduate student Erica Johnson recorded the final out of the top half of the fourth.
  •  The Blue Devils struck again for three more in the top of the fifth, but FDU answered with two runs of their own after Mahoney roped a double to right field and Emerson launched a ball over the center field wall for a homer to extend the game to the sixth inning.
  • CCSU however added on three more runs in the top of the sixth and FDU got two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't bring them home.
What's Next
FDU will conclude its first home series of the year on Saturday, April 3 with a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State beginning at 12:00 p.m.
