Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Edged by CCSU in Both Contests on Saturday

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (0-10, 0-8 NEC) concluded its first home series of 2021 campaign with 2-1 loss in a pitcher's duel in game one and a 5-4 loss in game two to Central Connecticut State (10-5, 8-0 NEC) on Saturday afternoon from the FDU Softball Field.

In game one, junior Alayna Savaglio tossed a gem as she pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit, two runs, and struck out 11 batters for the second consecutive day. Savaglio also reached first base all three times she went to the dish. Junior Courtney Mahoney roped a double to left field to score sophomore Lauren Luna from second. FDU outhit CCSU six to one in the first contest.

In game two, CCSU took a 5-2 lead into the seventh before the Knights added two runs and loaded the bases before they were able to get out of a bases loaded jam. Sophomore Hailey Ramberg belted her first homer of the season in the second inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Junior Jillian Ward and sophomore Cassidy Triska recorded the Knights other two RBI's.

Coach Foye's Thoughts
"I loved the energy in the last inning of game two and I felt the momentum swung in our favor. I give credit to the girls for battling and getting the tying and winning run on base unfortunately we just couldn't pull it out."

"Alayna was amazing today. She only gave up 1 hit and had 11 strikeouts but unfortunately we couldn't push across enough runs to get her the win she deserved. Courtney made a huge impact with a big hit in the first game and with her defense in the outfield. Her diving and sliding catches gave us some momentum and energy to keep us in the games. Cassidy had some hard hits and was seeing the ball well today and she had a great at bat that led to a key walk to load the bases when we were rallying in the bottom of the 7th."

Game 1: CCSU 2, FDU 1
How it Happened
  • Savaglio took the bump for the Knights in game one and struck out the first two batters, but Paige Stringer hit a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
  • After Savaglio retired the side in order to start the second, FDU cut the deficit in half after Savaglio and sophomore Savannah Thornell reached first and second and were driven in by a roped ball to left field off the bat of Mahoney, but the Knights left runners on second and third to end the bottom of the second.
  • Savaglio then pitched a scoreless third, fourth, and fifth inning as the game remained 2-1 in CCSU's favor before the Blue Devils loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and Savaglio stuck out Kim Howard to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Triska roped a double to center field and reached third after Savaglio singled, but Thronell lined into a double play to end the sixth.
  • Savaglio completed her one-hit game in the top of the seventh with three consecutive outs, but FDU couldn't score as the Knights fell 2-1.
Game 2: CCSU 5, FDU 4
How it Happened
  • The Blue Devils started game two similarly to game one with a two-run Stringer homer to right field to take an early lead, but Ramberg then belted a homer in the bottom of the second to get it back to a 2-1 game.
  • Freshman Riley Jones started on the mound for the Knights and got in a bases loaded jam in the top of the third with one out, but got out of it by forcing a fielder's choice to retire the batter running home and forcing a fly out to end the frame.
  • FDU's offense got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch, but the Savaglio and senior Rylie Schmeh recorded loud outs on balls roped to center and left field.
  • After CCSU added three runs to their lead in the top of the fifth, the Knights got one back in the bottom of the sixth when Ramberg drove in graduate student Madison Emerson with one out.
  • Sophomore Malori Bell held CCSU scoreless in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights scored two runs with two outs as Ward singled to center and Triska walked a run home with the bases loaded.
  • CCSU brought in game one's winning pitcher, Kaylee Whittaker with the bases loaded and struck Ramberg out looking to end the game.
