SOMERSET, N.J. - Three members of the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team received All-Northeast Conference postseason honors, as announced on Thursday afternoon by the conference office.
Junior midfielder
Ideal Shefqeti was joined by freshman defender
Hugo Bacharach on the First Team All-NEC while freshman forward
Jeremy Opong was named to the second team. Bacharach and Opong were each also named to the All-Rookie Team.
Following the announcement of the accolades, head coach
Seth Roland remarked, "I'm happy to see Ideal, Hugo and Jeremy each receive All-NEC honors, they are very well-deserved."
The side's points leader this season, Shefqeti garners his first appearance on an All-NEC team. He finished the 2020-21 regular season with two goals and one assist for a total of five points. Shefqeti started all eight fixtures for the Burgundy and Blue this season.
On Shefqeti's accomplishments this season, Roland added, "Ideal is the undisputed leader of our team and his competitive fire and winning attitude is clearly respected around the conference by everyone. His presence and influence is felt in the midfield of each and every game we play."
Bacharach, a conference Rookie of the Week this season, also started all eight contests for the Knights in his inaugural campaign. Despite being a defender, Bacharach's lone goal of the season proved to be a major one as the Benicasim, Spain native powered the Knights to a last-minute 1-0 win on the road at Sacred Heart. Following the game-winner, he earned the Rookie of the Week nod for the NEC.
"Hugo proved his dominance as a defender right from the start and it's difficult to be selected to the First Team All-NEC as a freshman," said Roland. He's a soccer-playing center back which means he's a very good passer and he is equally strong defensively as well."
Opong, a fellow Rookie of the Week, logged 662 minutes in play this year for FDU as he too started all contests played during the unique fall-to-spring slate. Opong delivered a thrilling game-winning golden goal in overtime at LIU back on March 15, helping lift the Knights to a 3-2 victory over the Sharks in FDU's second consecutive NEC win.
"Jeremy is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential and he has already proven that he can be a handful for opposing defenses to deal with. To be selected to the second team as a freshman is a feather in his cap," Roland concluded.
