SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Extra innings were needed to decide Sunday afternoon's game between the FDU Knights (3-14,2-10) and the Bryant Bulldogs (14-9-1, 11-1). The Bulldogs won the game in the 12th inning by a score of 9-8.
How It Happened:
- After three scoreless innings to open the game, Bryant jumped out in front after a solo home run
- FDU responded in the 5th inning capitalizing on several Bulldogs errors and scored three runs in the frame
- Junior pitcher Joey Kosowsky would hand the ball to classmate Brendan Medoro after going 4.2 innings allowing four runs
- Down 5-3 in the 7th, the Knights loaded the bases with consecutive singles and a hit-by-pitch. Thanks to wild pitch the deficit was cut in half, but FDU squandered an opportunity for more runs leaving the bases loaded
- Another Bryant error would get the eighth-inning rally started for FDU. Mike Veit's clutch hitting with a single brought TJ Werner across home plate to tie the game
- FDU took the lead in the 9th inning by loading the bases on several walks and a hit-by-pitch. Mike Veit's ground ball was knocked off the Bryant second-baseman allowing two runs to score
- Bryant answered in the 9th inning knotting the score back at seven and sending the game into extra innings
- In the 11th inning, Justin Sierra had a timely base hit driving home Mike Veit to take the one-run lead
- The Bulldogs would not go away scoring one run of their own forcing the game to the 12th inning
- Bryant began the one-out rally in the 12th inning with a hit-by-pitch and then a double down the left-field line brought across the winning run for the Bulldogs
Inside the Box Score:
- Coming in relief of Joey Kosowsky, Brendan Medoro kept the Knights in the game going 6.1 innings while giving up four runs off 12 hits, and striking out five
- Mike Veit went 4-8 on the afternoon scoring three runs while driving in a pair of runners
- Junior Tom Ruscitti went 2-4 but reached base seven times as he was walked once, and got hit-by-pitch twice
- FDU had 20 baserunners left on base in the game
