Scouting the Mountaineers
Notching just one win in conference play this season, Mount St. Mary's gets set for their first meeting with the Knights in nearly two years after not playing the Burgundy and Blue in the 2020-21 fall-to-spring campaign. With 20 underclassmen on their 2021-22 squad, the Mountaineers are loading up for the future as their season comes to a close on Sunday on their home turf. With their young side, the Mount has seen seven different players earn points on goals this season and every student-athlete listed on their roster see at least 90 minutes of game action. The Mount opened their regular season with a 2-1 win over Saint Peter's in non-conference play before dropping five-consecutive fixtures. Their last two wins have come in 1-0 games against George Washington (9/22) and against Howard (10/17).
Scouting the Knights
The Burgundy and Blue arrive in Emmitsburg having clinched their slot in the four-team Northeast Conference Tournament following their 5-1 rout of NEC associate member Howard on Halloween at University Stadium in Teaneck, N.J. Seth Roland's squad is now 5-1-2 in league play with their lone defeat coming at the hands of St. Francis Brooklyn on October 24 by a final of 2-0. Led by senior forward Diego Arribas' 23 points on eight goals and seven assists, the Knights attack swept the NEC weekly awards for the week of 11/1 with Arribas garnering the Player of the Week honor (one goal, one assist v. Howard) and sophomore newcomer forward Tony Gomez taking home Rookie of the Week following his goal and three assists in the win over the Bison. Five Knights scored in the fixture against Howard with three seniors/graduate students scoring on Senior Night in Adrian Barajas, Rocky Garretson and Stefano Pesce. Junior goalkeeper Vinícius Cadengue earned the start in goal and logged four saves in the full 90 minutes of match action. Arribas had the "hot foot" in the match as he booked a team-high four shots on goal.
Coach Roland's Thoughts
"We hope to end the regular season with a win and to carry momentum into the NEC playoffs this coming Friday."
