TEANECK, N.J. -- Freshman Justas Trainauskas was named NEC Rookie of the Month by the Northeast Conference's office on Wednesday afternoon. The Lithuanian tennis player started his career with a 6-2 record and a perfect mark in doubles play at the Jim Hunt Invitational.
In doubles action in Annapolis, Maryland, Trainauskas teamed with Mehdi Dhouib, going 4-0 over the course of the weekend tournament. The pair earned two hard-fought victories on the opening day before cruising past Alec Strause and Ryan Macy of Christopher Newport by a score of 6-1 on day two. On the final day, in the cross flight playoff, Trainauskas and Dhouib toppled Delaware's Pascal Wagemaker and Luis Molina 6-4 to complete the perfect weekend.
In singles action, Trainauskas split his four matches, which included beating Christian Pumpelly of the host Navy in three sets, and earning a victory of Strause in singles action, winning the deciding set 10-2. Trainauskas also took All-Atlantic 10 honoree Daniel Kleibhan to three sets, and just narrowly fell by a third set score of 10-8.
Trainauskas joined Moric Budinszky, Andrei Oprisor, and Teodors Pukse as four Knights to earn at least six wins over the course of the weekend. The Knights went 38-15 overall on the weekend, with Trainauskas playing a key role in the side's positive performance.
The Knights venture to Philadelphia on Thursday, October 14, to kick off the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
