Knights Topple Merrimack in Overtime Sunday, Arribas Strikes with Game-Winner

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - In a stunning come-from-behind victory on Sunday, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (4-5-2, 2-0-1 NEC) defeated Merrimack (3-7-1, 2-1-0 NEC) by a 2-1 tally in overtime on the road - delivering the Warriors' first NEC defeat of the season. The win evens the all-time series between the two NEC foes to 1-1-1.

How it Happened

  • Both teams played a relatively even first half with FDU putting up seven shots and allowing six from Merrimack. The home club would be the first to get on the board with a penalty kick goal in the 31' by Frantz Pierrot following a Knights foul in the box to put the Warriors up 1-0.
  • Neither side would score again until the 67' when junior Jordan Alonge sank his first NCAA career goal on an assist from senior Diego Arribas to level the tally at 1-1.
  • With the match finishing the second half tied, FDU had battled to force overtime where Arribas earned his second set of points on the game with a free kick goal in the 97' to end the fixture with just under three minutes remaining in the first overtime period. The goal was fifth of the season for the Knights' leading scorer.
Inside the Box Score
  • Each team finished with five corner kicks.
  • Redshirt junior Spencer King earned his seventh start of the season and logged three saves while improving his record to 3-2-1 this season.
  • Alonge fired-off the most shots of any member of the Burgundy and Blue with the London, England native logging seven shots - including three on goal - in his 97 minutes of work.
  • Sophomore Tony Gomez was the first to come off the bench for head coach Seth Roland and recorded a shot on goal in 49 minutes played. Freshman Kevin Leonhard also saw playing time, picking up three shots (one on goal) in 36 minutes of play.
Coach Roland's Thoughts
"The guys played with a great mentality today, going down a goal in the first half yet fighting back to tie and then win the game. We just kept battling and competing 'till we turned the game our way. Merrimack is an outstanding team with talent and experience, but today the guys wouldn't be denied. We shut down their most dangerous players and created numerous chances in our attack. Just a great win for the guys."
