TEANECK, N.J. - Following a dramatic 3-3 draw at Central Connecticut Thursday night, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (6-5-3, 4-0-2 NEC) walked away victorious Sunday evening at University Stadium with a blockbuster 2-0 victory over the first-place LIU Sharks (9-3-2, 5-1-0 NEC) on Alumni Night. With the victory, FDU handed the road side the first NEC defeat of the season and bagged three points in the conference table to give the Burgundy and Blue 14 on the season, just one shy of LIU and St. Francis Brooklyn's 15 a piece.
How it Happened
- Following LIU's first half kickoff, the Knights got the first two shots on the board, the first by junior Jordan Alonge in the 2' and the second by sophomore Tony Gomez in the 6'. After Gomez's blast, FDU received two corner kicks and following the latter, freshman Kevin Leonhard connected with sophomore Alberto Herranz Lopez to put the Knights up 1-0 over the Sharks in the 7'. For Herranz Lopez the score was his first-career goal.
- Alonge would try to make it a 2-0 fixture in the 21' but his bottom center shot was saved by the Sharks' keeper.
- In the 58', senior Diego Arribas would call it a night for the home team, providing the side's second score of the fixture and his seventh on the season thanks to assists from senior Fallou Tounkara and Alonge to make it 2-0 FDU in front.
Inside the Box Score
- Redshirt junior goalkeeper Spencer King logged three saves in the bout, while LIU fired-off eight shots (five off target) in the regulation match. The Arnprior, Ontario, Canada native now boasts 27 saves on the season and a personal record of 5-2-1.
- Alonge's 58' assist on the Arribas score was the first in his NCAA career. The English midfielder's four shots (two on goal) led Seth Roland's side in the fixture.
- All but two student-athletes from the home side played the full 90 minutes.
- This was the sixth time during the fall 2021 campaign the Knights have scored two goals in a contest.
- Sticking with the number two, it's also just the second time this season a second assist (Alonge 58') has been awarded for the Knights.
Coach Roland's Thoughts
"That was an outstanding performance by the guys, beating a very good LIU team from start to finish. We defended with focus and intensity the entire game, keeping their two very dangerous attacking players off the scoreboard. Offensively we created numerous chances and did a good job finishing two of them. It was a clean and complete effort that showed what we are capable of achieving."
