NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Behind a 2' score by sophomore
Tony Gomez, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team (5-5-3, 3-0-2 NEC) battled to a 3-3 double overtime draw Thursday night at Central Connecticut (2-8-1, 2-2-1 NEC).
How it Happened
- Gomez opened the scoring in the 2' with a header off a corner kick sent off by freshman Kevin Leonhard. The goal was Gomez's first of the season, while Leonhard picked up his second assist of the campaign.
- Nearly ten minutes later, Central Connecticut's John Michael Torres fired off a header of a corner kick of the Blue Devils' own to level the tally at one goal apiece in the 12'.
- Towards the end of the first half, Leonhard would score a goal of his own thanks to an assist from junior Edoardo Calzola in the 43' to break the ice and again give the Burgundy and Blue the lead - this time a 2-1 advantage.
- CCSU would tack on the following two goals, one in the 49' by Brik Martinsen and another in the 61' by Ola Telje, which gave the home side a 3-2 lead.
- Sophomore Hugo Bacharach scored the late-game equalizer, an 85' header off a free kick from senior Diego Arribas.
- In the 88' a penalty was called in the box sending CCSU's Sean Gannon to the penalty kick mark for a chance to win the fixture for the Blue Devils. In stunning fashion, Gannon's shot was saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Spencer King to keep the match level and send the game to overtime.
Inside the Box Score
- FDU recorded 17 shots in the match, six of which were on target.
- Leonhard finished with a team-high four points - three from his goal and another from the assist awarded on Gomez's score.
- Aside from King, four Knights (Bacharach, senior captain Ideal Shefqeti, sophomore Alberto Herranz Lopez and graduate student Stefano Pesce) played the full 110 minutes of competition at CCSU Soccer Field.
Coach Roland's Thoughts
"This game had a little bit of everything, including drama. It was a very physical match but we fouled too often, didn't defend their set pieces well as they scored three times, but at the same time we were dangerous on our attacking set pieces - scoring twice. When things looked bleak and the clock was ticking down, we tied the game 3-3 with only six minutes to go. But that wasn't enough suspense because with only two minutes to go they were awarded a PK, but Spencer [King] saved it. We would like to play more intelligently for sure, but we definitely showed a lot of character coming back and salvaging the tie."
