HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team is set to return to play for the first time in 2021 as the Knights will host the first of a two-game series against Merrimack on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. from the Rothman Center. FDU will conclude the series on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack (0-0, 0-0 NEC) will open their season this weekend against the Knights. Last season, the Warriors entered the Northeast Conference from Division II's Northeast Conference and ended the year with a 20-9 overall Merrimack played their first season in Division I last season after joining the Northeast Conference and ended the year with a 20-9 record overall and were 13-5 in conference action. The Warriors averaged 66.7 points per game and only allowed 58.1 per contest. Merrimack returns junior Kate Mager, who averaged 11.4 points per game, which ranked second on the team and made a team-high 76 three-pointers. The Warriors also bring back six of the top eight scorers from last year, including senior Alyssa Casey and sophomore Jayme DeCesare, who were third and fourth on the team in scoring.

The Knights ended 2020 and non-conference action with a 66-60 victory over St. Peter's on December 22 from the Rothman Center. Senior
Madison Stanley registered a double-double in the game after scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Stanley went 8-14 from the floor and dished out four assists. Freshman
Chloe Wilson also netted double-digits with 12 points and she pulled down six rebounds. Fellow freshman
Devyn Scott registered nine points and seven rebounds in the contest. Seven Knights recorded at least four points in the game. FDU dished out 12 assists on 24 made shots against St. Peter's.
Scouting the Knights
FDU (5-4, 1-3 NEC) ended 2020 by winning two of their final three games and earned the first NEC win of the season with a 55-54 victory against Central Connecticut State. The Knights currently rank second in the league in scoring defense as they only allow 60.4 points per game and hold opponents to only 30.6 percent from the floor. The Burgundy and Blue also rank second in the NEC in turnover margin with a +1.44 margin. Offensively, FDU averages 56.8 points per night and shoots 38.2 percent from the floor. Stanley leads the team offensively with 11.9 points per game and pulls down a team-high 6.0 rebounds per contest. Sophomores
Sierra DeAngelo (9.3) and
Maria Roters (8.7) are second and third on the team in points per game. The Knights have seven players that average more than 22.0 minutes per night.
Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"Everyone was just ready and everyone contributed on both ends of the court today," said coach Szumilo following the victory. "Boxing out and rebounding was a big key for our game today and not letting them get the ball on the offensive boards because, they average nearly 20 offensive rebounds per game."

After the two-game series against Merrimack, FDU will travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to take on Mount St. Mary's in a two-game series beginning Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m.
