SOMERSET, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer junior goalkeeper
Jahmali Waite was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Waite set a career high with 14 saves this past Saturday
at Cornell, holding the third-ranked team in the Northeast Region to just one goal on 15 shots on target. He was also named to the
TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week for his performance against the Big Red.
Waite saved six shots in the first half and then eight more in the second half, keeping the Knights within a goal with his ability to stop balls from going in the net. The junior made many diving saves during the match and also deflected two direct shots from within 10 yards early in the second half to deny Cornell any further tallies.
He now has a league-high 27 saves on the season with a .844 save percentage, good for second in the NEC. His 1.00 goals-against-average is second among NEC goalkeepers with at least 300 minutes played. Waite is also 11th in NCAA Division I with his 27 saves and is 27th in save percentage.
In 29 career games, Waite has allowed only 30 goals for a 0.98 goals-against average, and he has made 118 saves for a .797 save percentage.
The reigning First-Team All-NEC goalkeeper now has two player of the week awards, also earning the honor
last season after posting back-to-back shutouts against Saint Francis U and Robert Morris. Waite is the second Knight to receive the weekly recognition this season, joining
Diego Arribas who was
last week's honoree.
The Knights face NJIT at home tonight at 7 p.m., then take on Princeton at home Saturday night at 7 p.m.
