Dhouib Wins In Singles Against Bryant

TEANECK, N.J. – Freshman Mehdi Dhouib earned another Northeast Conference singles victory at the no. 1 singles spot, but the Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team fell to Bryant at home, 6-1.

The Knights (8-11, 3-2 NEC) played a competitive set of doubles matches, winning at third doubles and forcing a tiebreaker at first doubles. The tiebreaker, however, went in Bryant's favor, and the Bulldogs (17-10, 5-0 NEC) then won five of the six singles matches to win the overall bout.

Dhouib in earning his 6-4, 6-3 singles win over Wilson Dong moved his record to 3-1 in NEC singles matches this season, and he improved to 8-7 in dual matches (12-13 overall) this season.

The FDU doubles duo of junior Ivan Solans Diaz and Eduardo Cabral also scored a win, 7-5, at the third doubles to tie up the doubles competiton at 1-1. Sophomores Maciej Autuch and Andris Gudins fought a valiant battle at first doubles against Dong and Artur Jakubowski, forcing a tiebreaker. The duo, however, could not overcome their Bulldog adversaries in a close 6-7 (2) defeat that ceded the doubles point to Bryant.

Bryant then won three of the first four completed singles matches to clinch the overall match win. Autuch and Cabral both played tightly fought singles matches, with Autuch forcing a tiebreaker in the first set that went back-and-forth but did not go in his favor. He then dropped the second set by two games as well to fall 6-7 (8), 4-6.

Cabral fell behind in his first set but battled back to force a tiebreaker in the second set, taking his opponent Alexander Schou down to the wire before falling 3-6, 6-7 (3). The loss for Cabral was his first in an NEC match this season, moving his NEC record to 4-1.

Gudins, Solans Diaz and sophomore Moric Budinszky all dropped their singles matches in straight sets.

With the loss, FDU sits in third place among NEC teams this season, trailing first-place Bryant and Sacred Heart. The Knights close out the regular season on Friday, April 12, at Temple at 10 a.m., then await their seeding for the NEC Championships, which begin on Thursday, April 18, at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
