SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its series finale 19-6 at Bryant on Sunday afternoon.
In the loss, the Knights (4-23-1, 2-7 NEC) committed five errors and despite a 2-0 lead after their first turn at bat, were unable to hold off the Bulldogs (20-10, 7-2 NEC), who completed the three-game sweep.
Nate Brodsky,
Bobby Romano and
Tom Ruscitti each finished 2-for-4 with one RBI apiece in the loss as the Knights tallied 10 hits as a team.
Six Bulldogs registered two hits including Shane Kelly, who hit a solo home run and knocked in three runs in the win.
FDU starter
Chris Quijano (0-4) took the loss after recording four outs and allowing seven runs on four hits. Vito Morgese (1-3) earned the win for the Bulldogs pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned), while striking out eight.
Following the loss head coach
Justin McKay said, "We played one of our best games of the year on Friday but unfortunately followed with our two worst games of the year. You cannot win a series when you walk 27 hitter and make 11 errors in the field over a three-game span. I am disappointed with our execution these last two games. We will look to regroup with a big conference series coming up next weekend and keep working."
The Knights led 2-0 after their first turn at bat thanks to a pair of run-scoring singles by Romano and
Mike Veit.
After Kelly launched his solo homer in the bottom of the first the Bulldogs took the lead in the second with six runs on three hits. With the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Ward singled home a pair with a right-field knock and the Bulldogs never trailed again.
Austin Crebs came on in relief of Quijano and after an FDU error retired the next two batters he faced to keep the deficit at 7-2.
The Bulldogs would net three runs on four hits and two errors in the third as they broke the game open and established an eight-run cushion.
The Knights got a run back in the fourth but entered the final frame trailing 19-3. A bases-loaded walk by
Evan McDonald, a
Michael Gruber sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Ruscitti accounted for the Knights' three runs in the ninth.
Next for the Burgundy and Blue is a pair of non-conference games this week before they host Mount St. Mary's next weekend. First up is a home tilt against Siena this Tuesday, April 9 at 3:00 p.m.
