Baseball Topped by Seton Hall 10-5 on Tuesday

TEANECK, N.J. – Despite out-hitting Seton Hall in the contest, the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team fell 10-5 at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights (4-20-1) recorded 12 hits compared to the Pirates' (11-3) 11 knocks but were unable to take the rubber match of the season series. Each team struggled to knock in their baserunners as the Pirates left 11 men on base, while the Knights stranded eight.

In the loss, redshirt freshman Adam Frank went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and freshman Salvatore Monticciolo launched his team-leading seventh home run of the season in a 2-for-5 effort.

For the Pirates, Connor Hood finished 3-for-5, while Casey Dana and Sebastiano Santorelli each homered in the win.

Casey Dana opened the scoring for the Pirates with a first-inning solo shot over the left-field fence.

In the bottom of the inning, the first four Knights reached with hits but the home team was only able to muster one run. Mike Veit led off with a single but was picked off. Frank followed with a single, Monticciolo and Evan McDonald each doubled to tie the game at 1-1. However, Seton Hall starter Brennen O'Neill buckled down and would strand the bases loaded to keep the game knotted after one.

A two-run double by Santorelli in the second inning would break the tie and the Pirates tacked on five more runs in the third to stake an 8-1 lead. All five runs in the third inning came with two outs.

The most effective pitching performance of the afternoon for the Knights came by way of Tristan Plescia. Making his collegiate debut on the mound, Plescia inherited a bases-loaded jam with no outs and escaped unscathed. The right-hander induced a pair of fly outs before striking out Santorelli to end the frame.

The Knights would scratch across a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Michael Gruber. Gruber's fly out netted his first career RBI and he later logged his first career hit with a ninth-inning single.

Trailing 10-2 in the ninth, the Knights put up three runs, including Monticciolo's two-run blast. Monticciolo's homer, which cleared the right-field fence by a wide margin, came on a 3-0 count.

The Burgundy and Blue return to action with a Northeast Conference series at Bryant this weekend. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. this Friday, April 5.
