Men's Tennis Battles from Behind to Defeat Wagner 4-3

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team came from behind to score a big Northeast Conference victory over Wagner, 4-3, in its first home match of the season.

The Knights (5-8, 2-0 NEC) had dropped the doubles point and two of the first three singles matches to fall behind 3-1 in the overall match score to the Seahawks (5-4, 1-1 NEC). With all three remaining singles matches going to three sets, the Knights were able to score three straight wins to take the overall victory from their conference rivals.

Freshman Mehdi Dhouib and sophomore Andris Gudins both tallied victories in singles and doubles for the Knights. The tandem teamed up at first doubles to win a 7-5 match over Wagner's Anatoliy Lashkul and Dale Sandy, but the other two Knight duos fell 6-4 to cede the doubles point to Wagner.

Dhouib then captured the first singles victory of the day, winning 6-3, 6-1 over Lashkul at the no. 1 position. Wagner then scored singles wins over FDU sophomores Maciej Autuch and Moric Budinszky to take a 3-1 advantage.

Junior Ivan Solans Diaz then defeated Wagner's Eric Poland in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision to keep the Knights' chances alive, and Gudins did the same at the second singles spot with a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over reigning NEC Player of the Week Dylan Walters.

The match came down to sophomore Eduardo Cabral at the sixth singles spot against Wagner's Siddharth Anand. Cabral won the first set, 6-4, but Anand stayed alive with a 7-6 (3) win over Cabral to force a third set. Cabral, however, pushed past his opponent with a 6-3 third-set win to clinch the match win for the Knights.

The win snapped a two-match losing skid to Wagner and gave the Knights their seventh win in nine matches over their conference rival.

Cabral earned his team-best 12th singles win of the season, while Solans Diaz improved to 11-6 in singles play. Dhouib earned his 10th singles win of the season as well. All three players have six wins in dual matches and along with Gudins are 2-0 in conference matches.

The Knights take a break from conference play with two straight road matches in Pennsylvania, next playing at Bloomsburg Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
