Baseball Drops a Pair at Pennsylvania on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Pennsylvania 8-4 and 18-5 at Meiklejohn Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

These two teams will travel up the New Jersey Turnpuke and face off again tomorrow as the Knights (2-9-1) host the Quakers (7-4) for a doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.

Game One: Pennsylvania 8, Fairleigh Dickinson 4
In the series opener, redshirt freshman Adam Frank paced the Knights with a 2-for-4 effort and freshman Nate Brodsky launched his first career home run.

Sophomore right-hander Chris Quijano (0-2) started for the Burgundy and Blue and allowed eight runs on 10 hits while striking out four across his 5.2 innings of work. Christian Scafidi (2-0) earned the win for the Quakers by tossing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

The host Quakers struck first by scoring one run on two hits in the opening frame. Senior Matt O'Neill knocked in the run with a two-out single and finished the contest 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

The Knights answered back in the top of the second. Frank led off the inning with a double, stole third base and scored on a double-play groundout by Bobby Romano.

From that point on, the Quakers took control by scoring one in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth. Freshman Craig Larsen provided the key blow with a three-run homer in the third, which gave the home team its breathing room.

The Knights would get closer in the fifth after Michael Gruber drew a walk to set the stage for Brodsky's home run, which cleared the left-field fence and made it a 7-3 game.

Frank knocked in the Knights' final run of the contest with a single to left in the top of the final inning.

Game Two: Pennsylvania 18, Fairleigh Dickinson 5
The Knights led 5-0 in game two on Saturday before the Quakers responded with 18 unanswered runs to take the victory.

Senior Evan McDonald finished 3-for-5 in the contest, while Brodsky went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Larsen, Josh Hood and Peter Matt amassed three hits and knocked in four runs apiece for the Quakers in the victory.

In the top of the first, Brodsky hit a one-out double and Evan McDonald followed with a single. The next batter, Frank plated Brodsky with a sacrifice fly and gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Burgundy and Blue would tally another run in the second after catcher George Rosales doubled and center fielder Mike Veit followed with an RBI single to left.

Leading 2-0 in the fourth, the Knights continued to add on to their lead. The team was able to score three runs on just one hit thanks to an error and a wild pitch in the inning. Veit knocked home his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly, Brodsky drew a bases-loaded walk and Rosales scored on wild pitch.

After three scoreless frames, the Quakers broke through against FDU sophomore Aaron Cohn in the fourth. A leadoff walk was followed by back-to-back singles to net the home team's first run of the game.

Cohn would retire the next two Quakers before he loaded the bases with a walk. Junior right-hander James Donlon came on for Cohn and immediately allowed a two-run single to Matt. The Quakers would net another run on a caught stealing, which trimmed the Knights' lead to 5-4.

Penn would take the lead for good in the fifth. A leadoff homer by Sean Phelan tied the game and the Quakers moved in front with a bases-loaded walk.

Now leading by one, the Quakers broke the game open with five runs on two hits in the sixth. Three walks loaded the bases for Larsen, who hit a grand slam off of FDU freshman Joey Kosowsky.

Sophomore Peter Theodorellis replaced Kosowsky and allowed a walk and a double to net the fifth run of the frame. The Quakers would notch seven runs on seven hits in the seventh, which resulted in the 13-run margin of victory.
