BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team suffered a 12-2 setback in game two of its four-game series at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night.
The Knights (2-4-1) led 2-0 in the third inning but saw the host Roadrunners (7-9) respond with 12 unanswered runs.
Freshman shortstop
Nate Brodsky tallied two of the Knights' four hits in the loss and scored once. Junior
Mike Veit finished 1-for-3 with a walk and freshman
Salvatore Monticciolo was responsible for the team's fourth hit.
Sophomore
Chris Quijano started for the Burgundy and Blue and lasted four innings before exiting with a 2-1 lead, however, the bullpen was unable to hold down the home team's attack.
Quijano's classmate came on in relief and lasted 1.1 innings allowing seven runs – five earned – before giving way to fellow sophomore
Peter Theodorellis, who went two frames and gave up four runs.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Knights broke into the scoring column in the top of the third. Freshman
Brett Mercier reached on a leadoff error and Brodsky followed with a single down the right-field line. Veit drew a walk to load the bases and Mercier would score one batter later thanks to a throwing error by the Roadrunners.
With two away, a wild pitch allowed Brodsky to dart home with the Knights' final run of the contest.
The team's two-run lead would not stand as the host Roadrunners took control. First baseman Jesse Rowley plated the team's first run in the bottom of the third with an RBI single before the team went in front with two tallies in the fifth. A two-run, fifth-inning triple by outfielder Cole Valletta put the home team on top for good.
In the sixth, the Roadrunners would break the game open by scoring five runs on three hits, including RBI knocks from Jake Ortega and Sergio Robles.
A two-run single by Rowley in the seventh kickstarted a four-run inning as the home team solidified its win. Rowley finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Robles and Valletta also knocked in three each in the win.
Ethan Skuija started for the Roadrunners and went four innings allowing the two unearned runs, while punching out seven Knights. Roman Angelo (2-1) earned the victory by tossing three scoreless innings.
These two teams continue the series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
