HACKENSACK, N.J. – Despite three players scoring in double figures and sophomore
Madison Stanley recording her second double-double of the season, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team fell at home to Wagner, 60-44.
The Knights (6-19, 3-11 NEC) held Wagner to just 35.6 percent shooting and also the lowest point total by Wagner in a game in six games. FDU, however, faced a tough challenge from a Wagner defense that held the Knights to 32.7 percent shooting and only nine points in the fourth quarter. The Knights did block six shots and held Wagner's leading scorer, sophomore Taylah Simmons, to just 11 points, but the Seahawks (10-15, 8-6 NEC) forced the Knights to commit 20 turnovers and recorded 11 steals.
Stanley grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and scored 10 points for her second-ever double-double, and she also blocked three shots. Senior
Natalie Zamora led the Knights with 14 points and connected on 4-of-8 three-pointers.
Senior
Madelynn Comly added 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, moving her career point total to 969 with four games remaining in the regular season.
"Defensively, we did some good things," head coach
Peter Cinella said after the game. "I thought we did a good job on Simmons, but offensively it wasn't one of our sharper games. We got to find a way to attack the press, take quicker shots and get good shots and find the open man."
The Knights started the game by scoring the first four points, with Stanley and junior
Lauren Francillon each converting layups to provide the early lead. Wagner then scored the next six points before Stanley and Comly each sank layups to make it 8-6 Knights.
Back-to-back threes from the Seahawks provided them a three-point advantage before Zamora answered with the first of her four triples to knot the score at 11-11. Wagner, however, closed the opening quarter with a three-pointer and built their lead up to eight two minutes into the second period.
FDU kept themselves within six on a Zamora three-pointer with 4:29 until halftime, and Zamora's third deep ball of the half put the Knights down 29-22 at halftime.
The Knights fought hard in the third period to drop the margin down to three, 36-33, on a
Courtney Blankenship layup with just over four minutes left in the period. Wagner, however, then netted seven straight points to go up by 10 before Comly answered with a tough layup to make it 43-35 entering the final period.
The Seahawks then jumped back ahead by double-digits to open the fourth period, and despite a
Peniel M'Bikata layup immediately following that dropped the margin down to nine, the Seahawks regained their double-digit lead and held it the rest of the way.
Blankenship tied her season-highs with four rebounds and two assists in the game, and junior
Elise Graham blocked a career-best three shots as well.
Wagner also had three players score in double figures, led by Khaleah Edwards with 15 points.
The Knights remain at home for their next game against Sacred Heart, with a 7 p.m. start time for a game that will be aired on ESPN+.
