Knights Celebrate Senior Day with 74-66 Win Over Wagner

HACKENSACK, N.J. – All five starters scored in double figures as the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team extended its win streak to three by defeating Wagner 74-66 on Senior Day at the Rothman Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Knights (15-13, 10-6 NEC), who led by as many as 17 points, maintained their second-place standing in the NEC and have now won nine of their last 11 games.

The victory is also career win No. 200 for the Knights' sixth-year head coach, Greg Herenda.

Darnell Edge celebrated his senior day by scoring 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists to his ledger. The senior guard, who entered the day ranked seventh in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, made 4-of-6 from behind the arc.  Edge's classmate and fellow captain, Mike Holloway Jr. added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jahlil Jenkins and Xzavier Malone-Key netted 15 and 10 points, respectively. Jenkins added six rebounds and five assists in the win and junior forward Kaleb Bishop joined the foursome with 11 points.

Saturday's contest marks the 10th time this season that the Knights have registered five or more scorers in double figures. The Knights, who earned the season series split with the Seahawks, shot 59.1 percent in the second half and 51.1 percent overall, while limiting the Seahawks to 38.9 percent.

Nigel Jackson paced the Seahawks with 22 points and made four 3-pointers in the loss.

"Tonight was all about Mike, Darnell, Nadi and our senior manager Nick. We wanted to send them off with a victory on Senior Day and that is exactly what we did," said Herenda following the victory. "We beat a very, very hard-playing Wagner team. They play so hard and are so well-coached but our guys matched their intensity and competed just as hard for the entire 40 minutes."

On the final regular-season home game for his seniors and the play of his team, Herenda added. "Darnell and Mike were great today but the unsung heroes may have been Kaleb and Jahlil. We have a ton of weapons so you never know who is going to step up. Our team just needs to continue to find ways to defend and rebound better. March is around the corner and this is exciting stuff."

With Bishop leading the charge, the Knights led 20-14 with under seven minutes to go in the opening half. The junior forward scored 11 of the team's first 18 points in the contest.

A physical layup by Holloway with 50 seconds to play in the stanza provided the Knights with their first double-digit lead of the game, 31-21.

The Seahawks would net four of the final six points in the half and cut the Knights' lead to 31-25 entering intermission. Bishop paced the Knights in the opening half with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. As a team, the Burgundy and Blue knocked down 11-of-25 (44.4 percent), while holding the Seahawks to 8-of-22 (36.4 percent).

The Knights caught fire from behind the arc in the second half and made 6-of-7 after missing their first three tries of the game. With the 3-pointer falling, the Burgundy and Blue lead grew to 13 points, 55-41, with 10:49 to play in regulation. Edge spearheaded the burst by draining three trifectas over that span.

With the comfortable lead in hand, the Knights maintained complete control of the contest through the final whistle. Jenkins established the largest lead of the game, 72-55, when he coasted to the hoop for a layup with 2:09 to go.

Prior to tip-off the Knights honored seniors Edge and Holloway as well as senior forward Nadi Beciri, who missed the game due to injury.

The Knights close out the 2018-19 regular season with a pair of road games. First up is a date with Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Md.
