TEANECK, N.J. -- In a game that was called off to darkness, the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team tied the Dayton Flyers 3-3 at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (1-0-1) followed yesterday's thrilling victory over Seton Hall with another solid showing on Saturday. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Burgundy and Blue saw the Flyers (1-3-1) capture a 3-2 edge. Junior outfielder
Mike Veit chased home last night's hero,
Tom Ruscitti with an eighth-inning RBI double. The umpires decided to call the game at the conclusion of that eighth inning.
In the tie, redshirt freshman
Adam Frank went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Veit finished 2-for-4. Sophomore right-hander
Chris Quijano earned the start for the Knights and tossed 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on one hit, while striking out four. The Knights out-hit the Flyers 7-3 in the contest.
Following the game, Knights head coach
Justin McKay said, "Today was a tough and competitive game. Coach King really had his team competing from the first pitch. Our young team is learning everyday. We played two very quality programs this weekend and we're excited to get back to work. Thank you to all of the supporters who came out to Naimoli this weekend."
The Knights broke into the scoring column with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Plate discipline was the key to success in the frame as Frank and freshman
Nate Brodsky earned a pair of bases-loaded walks to net the two tallies. The loaded bases came via three singles by Veit,
Salvatore Monticciolo, and
Brad Levinson.
Trailing 2-0 and still hitless in the top of the fourth, Mitchell Garrity got the Flyers on the board by leading off the frame with a solo blast over the right-field fence. Quijano proceeded to pitch around a pair of walks in the frame and keep the lead at 2-1.
With two away in the top of the fifth, the Knights went to the bullpen and brought in freshman
Emmanuel Corporan. Making his collegiate debut, Corporan hit a batter and walked another before preserving the tie with a strikeout. The tying run would cross via a successful double steal by the Flyers.
In the top of the sixth, an RBI single by catcher Jay Curtis would put the Flyers on top for the first time 3-2.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Knights evened the score in the home eighth. Ruscitti drew a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Veit followed by sending a 1-0 pitch to center field for an RBI double. The Flyers turned to the bullpen as Justin Longbrake came on and struck out the next two Knights, which resulted in the final two outs of the game.
The Knights return to action next Friday, March 1 when they travel to Cary, N.C. to face Army West Point at 4:00 p.m. Following Friday's game with Army, the Knights will square off with Dartmouth in a doubleheader on Saturday.
