ENTERING THE KNIGHT
The Knights opened the 2019 season at the Louisiana Tech Invitational this past weekend, dropping all four opening games. The Knights played their best all-around game in the finale against host Louisiana Tech, a
7-5 defeat. Senior
Reanna Cervantes tallied three hits and a RBI to lead the Knights, who held one-run leads in the fourth and fifth innings before the host Lady Techtsters eventually moved in front for good with three tallies in the home fifth.
STARS FROM THE FIRST WEEKEND
Cervantes and junior
Madison Emerson each totaled four hits and one run scored to lead the Knights offensively, and Cervantes drove in two runs over the weekend on her way to making the all-tournament team. Freshman
Trisha Cook went 2-for-7 in her first three games of her collegiate debut. Sophomore
Abby England pitched four innings in relief over the two days, recording five strikeouts and allowing only one earned run for a team-best 1.75 ERA. Other freshmen that made their Knight debuts over the weekend included
Riley De Laval (four starts, one hit, one RBI),
Courtney Mahoney (three starts, one hit, two innings pitched, four strikeouts),
Cali Wyand (one start in four games),
Amarys Miller-Godsey (one start in four games) and
Jillian Ward (two games played).
SECOND TIME MEETING
This will be the second time FDU has ever faced Northwestern State in program history. The two teams played a single game in 2017, with the Lady Demons winning 11-3 in six innings at the Frost Classic hosted by UT Chattanooga. Five current Knights played in that 2017 matchup, with Cervantes going 2-for-3 with a RBI and Emerson also tallying a hit.
Baylee Ports pitched three innings of relief and allowed two earned runs, while Emerson started in the circle and drew the loss.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN STATE
The Lady Demons (2-6) began their season with a 2-2 split at the University of Texas Classic and then lost all four games this past weekend at the Mean Green Classic hosted by North Texas. Two of the losses this past weekend were against fellow New Jersey counterpart Seton Hall. Their two wins this season were against Boise State, who FDU plays later this season out in California, and against Boston College. The Lady Demons are led by two All-Southland preseason team selections in sophomore Cayla Jones and senior Kaitlyn St. Clair. Northwestern State was picked to finish sixth in the Southland in the preseason after going 28-25 (14-13 Southland) last year.
UP NEXT
FDU wraps up its trip to Louisiana with a five-game series against Southern University. The two teams are scheduled to play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday and a single game on Sunday before FDU returns home to New Jersey.
