Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Streak Ends for Women's Basketball at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 61-56 overtime loss at UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon.

The Knights (3-8) took their first lead of the game to start the second half and went up by as many as eight points late into the fourth quarter. The River Hawks (4-9), however, made a run to tie the game on a free throw in the closing seconds and then held the Knights to just one field goal in overtime play to earn the win.

Sophomore Lindsey Mack scored a career-high of 23 points to lead the Knights, sinking 8-of-14 shots from the field and 6-of-11 three-point tries. Sophomore Rachael Niles netted 10 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while junior Madison Stanley filled the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Senior Lauren Francillon added nine points and seven rebounds as well.

"We just need to get tougher and be able to finish games," head coach Angelika Szumilo said after the game. "The mistakes we've made are correctable, but we need to do better in those special situations in the future. Give UMass Lowell credit, they had a really good defensive plan and they did a good job taking out post players out of the game. Lindsey played really solid on both ends of the court. When they switched to a zone, she got open looks and kept making them."

The Knights shot 33.3 percent from the field and 31 percent from three and forced 19 River Hawk turnovers on defense. Both teams dished out 11 assists, but UMass Lowell edged the Knights on the boards, 47-38, while shooting 37.3 percent from the field.

The River Hawks scored the first five points before Niles drained a three from the wing for FDU's first basket. Mack followed with another three to make it 7-6, but UMass Lowell extended their lead back to six before Niles' second three of the period made it 16-13.

FDU trimmed the deficit back down to one on a Francillon jumper to make it 18-17, but the River Hawks then pushed their lead back to six with just over two minutes left in the half. Madison Stanley and Mack then each made short jumpers to make it a two-point game, and sophomore Makayla Thompson converted a tough layup in traffic to tie the game at 25 heading into halftime.

The Knights took their first lead when Niles drained a jumper in the paint to start the second half, and Mack extended the advantage to five with a three. The River Hawks later tied the game back at 30, but Stanley drove left for a layup to provide FDU the lead again.

FDU held a one-point lead heading into the final quarter, and Mack started the period with a layup to make it 37-34 Knights. UMass Lowell then hit a three, however, to tie the game, before Mack made her fourth three of the game to put FDU back in front. She then continued her hot shooting by draining three more long balls from the top of the key, making it 46-40 with under four minutes to play.

Stanley and senior Courtney Blankenship then added to the Knights' lead with back-to-back layups, but the River Hawks made a late run to cut the lead down to one on a three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left and tied the game on a free throw to send it to overtime.

The River Hawks netted the first four points of overtime before Francillon drilled a three to make it 55-54 with 1:46 left. UMass Lowell came back with a basket on its next possession and then forced a turnover on defense. The River Hawks then made four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The Knights head into the 2020 calendar starting Northeast Conference play at St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday at 5 p.m.
