SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team extended its win streak to three by defeating Bryant 78-63 at Chace Athletics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Four Knights (9-11, 4-4 NEC) scored in double figures led by junior forward
Kaleb Bishop, who finished with 20 points and four rebounds on 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
In addition to Bishop's second career 20-point game,
Mike Holloway Jr. scored 16 with seven boards,
Xzavier Malone-Key tallied 12 with eight rebounds and
Darnell Edge scored 10 with seven rebounds.
The Knights outrebounded the Bulldogs (7-12, 4-4 NEC) 38-32 and held them to 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from behind the arc.
For Bryant, SaBastian Townes scored 18 points, while Joe Kasperzyk finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the loss.
"That was a very solid road conference win and it started with Mike and Kaleb in the paint on both sides of the ball," said head coach
Greg Herenda following the victory. "When our bigs play that way we can be a very special team. We just beat a team that has been playing really good basketball. I'm very proud of how this team took care of business after a tough battle on Thursday night. It is not an easy turnaround game, especially traveling up here and preparing within 43 hours -- it's a testament to our conditioning and toughness. Now we need to rest and get ready for another week in the NEC."
With the game knotted at 12, the Knights rattled off a 9-0 run, which resulted in a 21-12 lead with under 10 minutes to play. Holloway Jr. was the catalyst for the outburst as he connected on three straight shots over that span.
The momentum continued for the Burgundy and Blue as they held the Bulldogs scoreless for over four minutes and extended their run to 17-4.
Jahlil Jenkins banked home in a difficult runner and then Edge splashed a turnaround jumper which gave the Knights a 31-14 cushion with under six minutes to play in the half. Jenkins would finish with nine points and eight assists in the win.
The Bulldogs would answer with eight straight points of their own, highlighted by a Townes corner 3-pointer to make it a 33-24 Knights lead at the under-four media timeout.
A
Brandon Powell steal, which set up a lay-in by
Elyjah Williams, sent the Knights into the locker room with a 39-27 lead. Williams' bucket ended a stretch of six straight misses for the Knights, who led by as many as 17 points in the half.
The Knights shot 51.7 percent in the stanza and scored 18 points in the paint led by Holloway's physicality. The senior forward scored 13 with four rebounds across the first 20 minutes of action, while Bishop chipped in with eight points.
Defensively, the Knights forced seven first-half turnovers and limited the Bulldogs to just 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from the field.
The second half featured more of the same for the Knights whose lead fluttered near 10 points for the remainder of the contest. The Bulldogs managed to get within eight points, 67-59, with under two minutes to play but the Knights closed out the win at the free throw line.
Next up for the Knights is a home date with LIU Brooklyn this Thursday, January 31. The game, which is set to tip-off at 5:00 p.m., will air on ESPNU.
