Maksimovic Hammers 16 Kills as Knights Sweep Saint Peter's

DENVER, Colo. – Led by sophomore Magdalena Maksimovic's 16 kills, the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, sweeping Saint Peter's 3-0 (26-24, 25-8, 25-23) in Saturday's finale at the Pioneer Showdown.

Maksimovic's kill total led the match, while junior Erika Sullivan added her fourth double-double of the season by recording 13 kills and 12 digs. The Knights (1-8) featured two setters in the victory as sophomore McKenna Setterlund dished out 22 assists and freshman Corina Beimers totaled 16.

Alanis Alvarado topped the Peacocks' (2-11) box score with 11 kills, while setter Wildalys Soto finished with 20 assists in the loss.

The Knights scored the first four points of the match and held a 5-1 lead before the Peacocks answered and tied the game at five. It was a neck-and-neck contest throughout, before back-to-back kills by Erin Singer and Jessica Throckmorton broke the 24-all tie and gave the Burgundy and Blue a 1-0 match lead.

In the second frame, the Knights cruised from the outset, stretching a 5-0 lead to 11-3 right out of the gates. Throckmorton opened the set with an ace and served four more points as the Knights received four kills from Maksimovic and two from Sullivan over the first 11 points.

Back-to-back kills from Singer and Brooke Stevens provided the Knights with their first double-digit lead of the match, 15-5, as they raced to the lopsided win. Throckmorton amassed 11 service points in the set as she kept the Peacocks off-balance throughout the rout.

The third set saw the Peacocks get back on track as they erased an 17-13 deficit by rattling off a 6-1 spurt. Karla Seda registered three service aces over the course of the run.

Trailing 23-22, the Knights would score the final three points of the contest. Throckmorton tied the game with a kill before Maksimovic finalized the victory by hammering home an assist from Setterlund.

The Knights tallied nine blocks in the win, led by Stevens, who finished with five.

Next up for the Knights is the Lafayette Invitational next weekend in Easton, Pennsylvania. They open up with Hartford on Friday, September 14 before a pair of matches on Saturday against Delaware State and the host Leopards.
