Softball Announces 2019 Recruiting Class

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team and head coach Chris Foye announced the complete incoming class of 2022 Friday afternoon.
 
The Knights welcome the addition of seven freshman to the team for the 2019 season, adding to the roster of 12 returners which includes four seniors, four juniors and four sophomores. Joining the Knights are Trisha Cook, Samantha Cortez, Riley De Laval, Courtney Mahoney, Amarys Miller-Godsey, Jillian Ward and Cali Wyand.

TRISHA COOK | First Base/Catcher | Hudson, Colo.
 
Cook earned all-state second team honors her senior season for Legacy High School, batting .562 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI with a .620 on-base percentage and 1.075 slugging percentage to help guide her team to the state semifinals. She twice received all-conference recognition, including first team as a senior. Cook is also a stellar student in the classroom, earning all-state academic honors her sopohomore, junior and senior years while also being recognized in the National German Honor Society each of those years.
 
"Trisha is a high average hitter who has a power bat," said Foye. "She can catch for us and play any corner position. Her versatility along with her great bat will help the team succeed."

SAMANTHA CORTEZ | Infielder/Utility | Temecula, Calif.
 
Cortez starred at third base for Temecula Valley High School. She was a two-time CIF honoree, including garnering second team All-Southwestern League honors in 2017. Cortez served as team captain for each of the past two years, and she academically was a Principal's Honor Roll and Presidential Honor Roll member.
 
"Sam is a great defender with a strong arm," said Foye. "She is a high average hitter with some pop in her bat. We will be looking to plug her right into the middle of our lineup."

RILEY De LAVAL | Outfielder | Houston, Texas
 
De Laval played a versatile role for a highly successful St. Scholastica Academy team in Louisiana. De Laval earned all-state honors each of the past three seasons, all-district honors all four seasons and all-metro honors her senior and sophomore years. De Laval helped guide her team to the Class 4A state playoffs her sophomore and freshman seasons, and she was named team MVP as a freshman. The Doves made the District II playoffs during her junior season as well.
 
"Riley is a speedy slapper that can cause havoc on the bases," said Foye. "She has great instincts in the outfield with an above-average arm. She has the ability to track down any ball with her quickness."

COURTNEY MAHONEY | Outfielder/Utility | Wall, N.J.
Mahoney lettered all four years for Wall Township High School, earning offensive player of the year as a junior and all-division honors as a senior. A highly regarded student, Mahoney made her high school's honor roll each of her four years and served on her school's athletic leadership committee, helping to organize and run events for St. Gregory's Food Pantry, MLK Jr. Day of Service and "Sandy Helps Harvey", an initiative she organized to send aid to families suffering from the effects of Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
 
"Courtney is a true utility player who can help us at any position, whether it be in the infield, outfield, or as a pitcher," said Foye. "She has a strong bat that will help us on the offensive end as well."

AMARYS MILLER-GODSEY | Catcher/Infielder | Stevenson Ranch, Calif.
 
Miller-Godsey played a big role on a powerful Valencia High School softball team. She was part of a 2016 team that won the Foothill League championship and then earned second team all-league her junior and senior years, when her teams went undefeated and repeated as league champions. Miller-Godsey also played club softball for the SoCal Choppers and the Cal Cruisers, who are both nationally ranked club teams.
 
"We will look to Amarys to step right into a leadership role," said Foye. "As a catcher, she already has great instincts for the game and her experience in guiding a pitching staff and defense will only help us. She is also a high average hitter with some pop."

JILLIAN WARD | Infielder/Utility | Jersey City, N.J.
 
Ward played for nearby Hudson Catholic and is the school's first Division I softball recruit. She hit .385 as a junior and helped the Hawks win the school's first county championship. Ward is a two-time Hudson Register honoree as a shortstop as well. In her senior season, she helped guide her team to the Non-Public NJSIAA state playoffs.
 
"Jill is a speedy runner with great hands and a strong arm on defense," said Foye. "She is a great utility player who we know we can put anywhere in the field and she will help us win games."

CALI WYAND | Infielder/Utility | Fillmore, Calif.
 
Wyand starred as a four-year letter winner in softball and basketball at Fillmore High School, earning all-league honors in both sports all four years. She served as team captain in both sports starting from her sophomore season onward, and she was her school's winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award as a senior. Wyand graduated as her school's valedictorian, earning California Scholorship Federation honors and being inducted in the National Society of High School Scholars. She served on her school's student body leadership council and received academic all-league honors all four years as well.

"Cali is a very good defensive player that can play any middle infield position," said Foye. "Her strong arm is her best asset, and she has a good bat that will help round out our lineup."
