HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team fell in four sets (14-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-18) to St. Francis Brooklyn at the Rothman Center on Saturday afternoon.
Junior outside hitter
Erika Sullivan recorded her fourth double-double of the season, totaling 13 kills and 13 digs, while freshman setter
Corina Beimers dished out 24 assists in the loss.
Ally Speweik and Weis Hurkmans led the charge for the Terriers (5-10, 1-1 NEC) finishing with 14 and 10 kills, respectively.
The match got off to a great start for the Knights (2-12, 0-2 NEC) as they led 10-6 aided by aces from Sullivan and freshman
Kati Quaintance.
Leading 13-9, the Burgundy and Blue rattled off an 8-2 spurt to take command of the set. Over that span, the team featured a balanced attack as
Nataliya Rybakova logged two kills, while Quaintance,
Erin Singer,
Brooke Stevens and
Jessica Throckmorton each tallied one.
After taking the first set by 11 points, the Knights saw the match swing in favor of the Terriers, who responded with a 25-14 win of their own in set number two. The Terriers built a 10-3 lead and never looked back as they evened the match at 1-1.
The third set was knotted at 11-all after a kill by Sullivan, however, the Terriers grabbed the reins by scoring nine-straight points. Hurkmans put away a pair of overpasses and Mireya Ramirez kept the Knights off-balance with her effective service. The lead remained at eight or more points for the duration of the set as the Terriers took a 2-1 edge.
An ace by St. Francis' Gabriella Nobrega accompanied a 4-0 start in the final set. The Knights stormed back with five-straight points of their own aided by an ace and a kill from Sullivan.
The trading of runs continued as the Terriers responded with five in a row and never trailed again. The Knights would pull even at 11-11 before the Terriers ran away by scoring six of the next seven points en route to the victory.
In the loss, the Stevens tallied five blocks and has now recorded three or more in nine of the Knights' 13 matches this season.
The Knights return to action with a non-conference road match at NJIT this Tuesday, September 25. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. in Newark.
