PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A trio of Knights logged double-digit kills but the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team was edged in five sets by UMass Lowell (25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 29-27, 14-16) in their final match of the Friar Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Erika Sullivan totaled 14 kills to lead the way, while
Magdalena Maksimovic finished with 13 and freshman
Jessica Throckmorton added 12 in the closely-contested defeat.
The River Hawks (1-5) also featured three in double figures topped by Lade Adeiny's match-best 18 kills.
The Knights (0-6) won the first set by scoring four of the final five points with Throckmorton recording the final kill in the 25-23 win.
The River Hawks returned the favor with a two-point win of their own in the second set by overcoming a seven-point Knights' lead. After back-to-back kills by freshman
Kati Quaintance and Maksimovic, the Knights held a comfortable 18-11 lead, however, the River Hawks fired back with five straight tallies to claw back into the match.
Trailing 22-21, the River Hawks scored four of the final five points and McKenna Bova ended the set with a kill.
The third set saw the River Hawks turn an 18-15 deficit into a six-point victory by finishing the contest on a 10-1 run.
In the fourth frame, the Knights put forth their best offensive performance by recording a .372 attack percentage – their highest in a single game this season. Over the course of the 29-27 win, the Knights amassed 18 kills, while committing just two errors on 43 total attacks.
The Knights staved off elimination by breaking a 27-all tie with an
Abigail Strebig kill and an attack error by the River Hawks.
With both teams seeking their first win of the 2018 season, the deciding set was a neck-and-neck battle.
A Maksimovic kill gave the Knights their first match point of the contest but the River Hawks proceeded to score the final three points and take the win. Grace Burkett sealed the 16-14 win for the River Hawks with a solo block.
In the loss, Throckmorton and Maksimovic each tallied double-doubles by recording 21 and 17 digs, respectively. Sophomore setter
McKenna Setterlund also logged the two-by-two with a season-high 43 assists and 14 digs.
The Knights travel out west for their next series as they compete at the Pioneer Classic next weekend in Denver, Colorado. First up is a match against the host Denver Pioneers on Friday, September 7.
