Volleyball Travels to Providence for 2018 Friar Classic

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Returning to action this weekend, the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team travels to Providence, Rhode Island, to compete in the Friar Classic.  
 
Live stats will be available for all three matches and live video will be available for Saturday's tilt against Providence.

LAST TIME OUT  
The Knights participated in the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational, down in Macomb, Illinois. FDU competed in three matches against Tennessee Tech, Western Illinois, and Evansville. In its first matchup against the Golden Eagles, the Knights dropped a heavily-contested back-and-forth battle 3-1, with each set being determined by two points (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 28-30). The Burgundy and Blue would then fall in its next two outings against the Leathernecks and the Purple Aces.  
 
STEADY SULLIVAN 
Junior Erika Sullivan put on a clinic during the Leatherneck Invitational. Throughout her first three games, Sullivan has 38 points, 34 kills, and 38 digs, all three pace the Knights.  
 
FEARSOME FRESHMEN 
The Burgundy and Blue had a bunch of new faces perform well last weekend in their first action with the Knights. Freshman Jaelyn Young was a force on the defensive end, tallying 33 digs in her first three collegiate games. Fellow newcomer Jessica Throckmorton followed with 26 digs and 12 kills. Another freshman who had a big impact was Brooke Stevens, who leads the team with 11 blocks through the first three outings. Corina Beimers had a team-high 19 assists in the match against Tennessee Tech.  
 
SCOUTING BROWN 
The Knights are the first opponent this season for the Bears. Last season, the Ivy League program went 7-18 overall, along with a 2-12 mark in conference play. The Burgundy and Blue dropped its 2017 contest with Brown in straight sets. The Bears return four players who totaled over 100 kills last season, in Sabrina Stillwell, Gabrielle Moriconi, Jacqueline Jacobs, and Courtney Palm. 
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE 
The Friars are coming into this weekend with a 1-2 record, with its lone win coming by a 3-0 sweep over Hartford. A season ago, Providence finished with a 17-16 overall record. The Friars return 2018 Preseason All-Big East player in Addison Root. Last season, Root recorded 416 kills, 36 service aces, and 258 digs. The Friars will also feature Jenae Alderson, who added 269 kills in the 2017 season.  
 
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL 
 The River Hawks are still seeking their first win of the season after starting with three losses at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic and a setback to the Northeast Conference's Bryant Bulldogs. Offensively, this year's team is led by freshman Kate Bilyeu and sophomore Ariel Dulaney, who have 22 and 21 kills, respectively. The team has featured two setters this season including junior McKenna Bova, who leads the team with six assists per set.
 
UP NEXT  
The Knights will travel out to the Rocky Mountains, competing in the Pioneer Classic out in Denver, Colorado. FDU will be competing against Denver, Idaho State, and the Peacocks of Saint Peter's over the two-day event beginning with a single match against the hosts on Friday, September 7.
