Knights Fall To Top-Seeded Saint Francis U In NEC Quarterfinal

LORETTO, Pa. -  The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team fell 89-70 in the quarterfinal of the NEC Tournament Wednesday evening to Saint Francis University.  The Knights finish the season at 15-15 overall, including a 7-11 mark in NEC play.

Madelynn Comly led the Knights offensively with 16 points on the evening to go along with four rebounds and three assists.  Freshman Kamrin Weimer was 5-9 from behind the three-point line to finish with 15 points and three assists.  Lauren Francillon scored 12 and added 11 boards for her 6th double-double of the season.

Saint Francis junior Jessica Kovatch finished with 39 points, going 11-17 from beyond the arc.

"What else can you say really, some of the shots Jessica Kovatch hit today were unfathomable," head coach Pete Cinella said post game.  "I liked how we played in the second half, I wish we could have played that way earlier.  We moved the ball better, hit a season-high 12 threes and won the turnover battle, but when someone hits 11 three-pointers in a game it kind of blows all those stats out of the water."

The Knights picked up a couple of clutch defensive stops early on in the first.  Amina Markovic swatted away a Courtney Zezza layup attempt on the Red Flash's first possession before some high-pressure defense forced a Maya Wynn turnover to keep the SFU offense out of rythym.

The game remained scoreless for the 2:17 before Jess Kovatch managed to step back and drain a three-pointer to get the SFU offense off and running.

The Knights held tough, answering the Red Flash shooters with some big shots of their own.  A nice move by Fancillon in the paint cut the SFU lead to 0ne point before Weimer drained her first three of the evening to knot things up at 12.

Just under a minute later, the Knights took their first lead courtesy of a Madelynn Comly layup, 14-12.

"I'm happy with the way our team battled throughout the whole game," Cinella said.  "To see a player like Amina Markovic, as senior in her last game, go out fighting like that was great to see."

Kovatch got going after the Comly layup, drilling five consecutive three-pointers to give SFU a 47-24 lead at the half.

Although the Flash would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game, the Knights continued to battle, out-scoring SFU 46-42 in the second half.  Comly, Weimer, Natalie Zamora, and Jenna Clark each hit a pair of triples in the final 20 minutes of the game. FDU shot 27-69 (39.1%) from the field on the afternoon.

At 15-15, FDU finishes the season with the highest win-total since Cinella took over as head coach in 2007.

"We played a good second half and took care of the ball, hit some shots which is hard to do with these guys.  Overall, I'm happy with how we battled."
