Knights Pick Up Split With Tigers, Colonials

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team went 1-1 in Saturday afternoon action from the nation's capital earning a 3-2 win over the Princeton Tigers as well as a 10-1 loss against George Washington University. The Knights' record moves to 4-8 on the season.

FDU returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they close out the weekend with a rubber match against the Colonials at 2:15 p.m.

Game One: Fairleigh Dickinson 3, Princeton 2

FDU earned its fourth win of the season and second consecutive victory over the Tigers Saturday morning in a tight game that saw pitcher Abby England scatter six hits and two earned runs as well as four strikeouts over a strong seven innings.

The Tigers struck first, scoring in the top of the opening frame off a double from Allison Harvey of Princeton, to go up 1-0, however the Knights answered right back in the bottom of the first when a heads-up play by Serena Meehan on the base paths allowed the junior to score from second base on an error from catcher Emily Taggert.

The Princeton bats were able to manufacture another run in the top of the second off of a single through the infield from Megan Donahey, however England went to work soon after, locking down the Tigers and limiting the Princeton offense to just three hits over the final five innings.

Madison Emerson pulled FDU even in the bottom of the third with a double down the right field line scored Meehan after reaching on. A single of her own.  The Knights took the lead one inning later when Jaymee Jackson knocked another hard-hit ball down the right field line for and RBI single that scored Logan Kolehmainen.

England would retire nine of the last ten batters she faced en route to earning her second win of the season to move to 2-1.

The Knights finished with three runs off of six hits and committed one error.  Serena Meehan went 2-2 at the plate and added two runs.

Game Two: George Washington 10, Fairleigh Dickinson 1

The Knights spotted GWU a two-run lead in the first inning after a four-hit outburst from the Colonials to start the game.  Back-to-back singles and stolen bases from Marta Fuentes and Sidney Bloomfield set the stage for George Washington, who drove the duo home with a sacrifice fly and double to right field to give GWU a 2-0 lead.

The Knights recouped one in the top of the second, however.  Cervantes led off with a double to right field before Holly Mercier and England drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Riley Schmeh.  Schmeh responded with a hard hit ball to right field which scored Mercier to cut the lead to 2-1.

The game remained scoreless for the next two innings until George Washington exploded for a four-hit, seven-run outburst that ended the game in the 5th inning.

Erica Johnson earned her fourth loss of the season to push her records to 1-4.  Reanna Cervantes and Schmeh each went 1-2 at the plate.
