WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team lost 20-0 in five innings against the George Washington Colonials Sunday afternoon to close out a five-game road trip. The loss moves the Knights to 4-9 on the season.
FDU returns to action this week when they head west for a week-long California road trip beginning with a double-header against Santa Clara University on Tuesday, March 13th at 5 p.m.
Colonial hurler Sarah Costlow was efficient in the circle for GWU, giving up just three hits and striking out four in a five-inning shutout against the Knights.
Despite giving up a leadoff single to Summer Mendoza to start the game, Mendoza retired the next three consecutive Knights batters to prevent any chance of a first-inning rally.
GWU took the lead in the bottom of the first when Riley Tejcek knocked a bases-loaded single onto left field to spit the Colonials a 2-0 cushion.
After a 1-2-3 top of the second for FDU at the plate George Washington tacked on four more to push the lead to 6-0 after a Jessica Linquist leadoff single sparked a five-hit barrage for the Colonials in the bottom of the second frame.
Mendoza found herself facing a two-out situation when she stepped into the batters box one inning later, and the sophomore again belted a hard-hit ball, this one falling down the right field line for a double. However managed to get Jaymee Jackson to groundout the very next at-bat to once again stifle the Knights offense before it could get going.
FDU's best chance to break the shutout came in the bottom of the fourth when Madison Emerson reached on a single before advancing to third on a passed ball. With A runner in scoring position, Logan Kolehmainen drew a walk to put Knights at both corners for Riley Schmeh.
A called third strike nailed Schmeh to end the inning.
An 11-run fourth from the Colonials pushed the score to 20-0 before Costlow closed things out in the top of the fifth to get the win.
Baylee Ports went 1.1 innings and gave up six hits to earn her fifth loss of the season (2-5). Mendoza went 2-2 at the plate for the Knights.
