Volleyball Swept by Bryant in Straight Sets

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- On the road for the second straight day, the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team (2-17, 0-5) dropped a 3-0 match (25-21, 25-13, 27-25) to the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday evening.

In the contest, the Knights blocked nine attacks, totaled 29 kills, and matched Bryant with 51 digs.

In the first set, the Burgundy and Blue battled toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs, matching every point throughout most of the set. Kills by outside hitters Erika Sullivan and Erin Singer had the Knights trailing by four, 12-8. Trailing 20-13, FDU came roaring back after a couple of errors by Bryant. A block from Singer and freshman Kati Quaintance, coupled with a Magdalena Maksimovic kill had the Knights within one, 21-20. Despite the Knights' surge, Bryant hung on to take the first set 25-21.

The Knights fell behind early in the second set, as the Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Seeking momentum, Brooke Stevens and Nataliya Rybakova recorded kills but the Bulldogs prevented a rally by scoring six straight points late in the set. The second set saw the home team take a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 win.

Looking to stay alive in the third set, the Knights came out aggressive. As the trio of Maksimovic, Singer, and Sullivan were forces to be dealt with. Each tallying multiple kills early on to put the momentum towards FDU. The junior Sullivan forced a Bulldogs timeout with back-to-back kills, giving the Knights a 16-13 lead.

From that point, both teams settled in and traded points. With the Knights taking a 22-18 lead late, Bryant claimed the next two points forcing head coach Andrea Nolan to use one of her timeouts. Coming out of the timeout, sophomore setter McKenna Setterlund set up Singer who gave the Knights a three-point edge, 23-20. From that point on, Bryant registered seven of the next nine points to finalize the 27-25 victory.

Sullivan paced the Burgundy and Blue with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Maksimovic tallied seven kills and five digs. Freshman Jessica Throckmorton ended the match with 12 digs for the Knights.

Up next, the Knights will host Robert Morris on Friday, October 12, at 5:00 p.m. inside the Rothman Center.
