BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team dropped a four-set match to St. Francis Brooklyn 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25 at the Genovesi Center on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Erika Sullivan and sophomore
Magdalena Maksimovic paced the Knights (2-21, 0-9 NEC) in the loss by tallying nine kills apiece. First-year libero
Jaelyn Young led the team with 13 digs, while classmate
Corina Beimers and Sullivan each tallied 12. Beimers also doled out 14 assists to record her second double-double in as many matches.
Three Terriers (7-16, 3-6 NEC) amassed double-digit kills led by Vanja Miljacic's 17. Miljacic also added 19 digs to her scoresheet in the victory.
In the opening set, the Knights led 4-1 thanks to an ace from
Abigail Strebig and a kill by Maksimovic, however, the Terriers turned the tables with an 8-1 run and maintained their lead until the finish.
The Knights held a 10-8 edge in the second set before the Terriers roared back with a 5-0 spurt. After a kill by sophomore
Nataliya Rybakova brought the Knights to within one point, the Terriers answered with four straight and captured a 21-17 lead. The four-point lead proved to be the final difference as the home team took a 2-0 match lead.
With freshman
Sophia Spiridonakos serving, the Knights captured a 9-3 lead in the third frame. An ace by Beimers helped the Burgundy and Blue stretch its advantage to 14-6 but the Terriers would fight back.
Miljacic's offense helped the Terriers mount a 7-1 run and they eventually tied the game at 22 with a kill by Wies Hurkmans. The Knights recovered as two kills by Maksimovic sandwiched a Terriers attack error and gave them the third-set win.
The momentum would not last for the Knights as the Terriers raced out to an 11-4 lead in the fourth frame. Despite the large deficit, the Knights remained undeterred and answered with a 10-2 run to capture a 14-13 edge. Beimers served six points over that span including a service ace. The first-year Knight finished with a career-high three aces in the match.
An ace by Nina Tiedt and kill by Miljacic helped the Terriers get back on track as they regained the lead, 20-16, and held on for the victory.
The Knights are back on the court this Wednesday, October 24 when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on Rider in non-conference action.
