TEANECK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was defeated at home by a final score of 2-0 against the Princeton Tigers Saturday evening at University Stadium. The loss moves the Knights to 5-2-1 on the season. FDU will return to action on Wednesday, September 27
th when they host Bucknell at 7 p.m.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jahmali Waite stopped eight of ten shots in his debut in goal for the Knights.
Daniel Lasarte led the Knights with two shots on goal.
"We lost to a team that had not had their share of luck so far this season, but we knew was going to be a big challenge for us," head coach
Seth Roland said. "I give Princeton credit for winning the game and outplaying us. Having said that, I'm confident that we are capable of playing better and competing in a more cohesive and coherent manner."
Princeton enjoyed extended spells of possession for much of the first half, testing White early and often, snuffing out what solid scoring chances the Knights were able to generate with stifling defense and tight, physical tackling.
The true freshman made a sprawling save on Bobby Hickson in the opening minute of the game to prevent the Knights from falling into a 1-0 hole before things could even get going, looking poised and confident in net.
The Tigers kept their foot on the gas as the first half drew on, unrelenting in both their attack and in their defense as their back line managed to snuff out a handful of dangerous looking rushes from
Fredinho Mompremier and
Jacob Labovitz before they could materialize into offense.
Stjepan Kilic nearly made it 1-0 FDU after stepping into a booming shot down the left field side. The ball, which at first looked destined to sail high and wide, floated over the hands of keeper Jacob Schachner before deflecting off the crossbar and out of play. The score remained even at nil-nil.
Princeton counter-attacked, and once again Waite came up with a series of huge saves in the final minutes of the first, stopping a pair of point-blank chances from Princeton to preserve the tie.
"I thought Jahmali had an outstanding game for us tonight," Roland said.
As the teams took the field for the start of the second half, Waite was tested with an early shot from Jeremy Colvin and again answered the bell.
The Knights made a series of substitutions in the hope of generating more offense, bringing on fresh legs in the form of
Ahu Obhakhan, and
Josh Schupak, however, Princeton continued to smother the FDU attack.
Daniel Lasarte managed a pair of clean looks on goal. However, Schachner snuffed out both.
Finally, with just over ten minutes remaining, Will Lentz broke the stalemate for the Tigers, slotting home a perfectly placed header into the far corner of the net after collecting a cross into the box from Harry Heffeman to make it 1-0 Tigers.
Princeton would add an insurance goal six minutes later in the 85' to seal the deal and hand the Knights just their second loss of the season.
"We've been aware all along that things would get tougher," Roland said. "It always gets tougher as the season goes on. Teams scout you, they get better defensively, and they get up to play you when you're doing well. Every game is going to be a difficult challenge for the rest of the season, and we have to take it one game at a time, and I expect that we will accept the challenge of figuring out how to get back to winning games."
