TEANECK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory over the Bucknell Bison Wednesday evening at University Stadium, clawing back from a 2-0 deficit to score three straight unanswered goals including the overtime winner from
Fredinho Mompremier. The victory moves the Knights to 6-2-1 on the season as they enter conference play with the best record in the NEC.
Goalkeeper
Tiago Capela made made two saves on three shots faced and earned the victory in net for FDU.
Daniel Lasarte (2),
Ahu Obhakhan (5), and Mompremier (5) provided the goal scoring on the evening for the Knights.
"What an incredibly inspiring win that was," head coach
Seth Roland said. "The guys showed tremendous heart coming back from being down two goals and then tying the game late and winning it in overtime. We refused to give up."
FDU controlled the pace of play and took the majority share of scoring chances in the games opening moments, however it was Bucknell that managed to draw first blood.
Despite consecutive chances from Lasarte,
Marcus Marshall, and a long-distance strike from
Jacob Labovitz at the seven minute mark, Bucknell held fast as keeper Emmet Wittmer swallowed Marshall's chance, while some solid defending from the Bucknell back line forced the Knights to push their effort high and wide of the cage and out of danger for the Bison.
Despite the early pressure from FDU, Bison midfielder Bernie Wright saw an opportunity on the quick counter-attack and made the most of it, coming down the left wing with possession before making a nice cut to the inside of the box, finishing it off with a perfect low strike into the low corner of the net to put the Bison up 1-0.
Undaunted, FDU continued to press, firing another salvo of shots on goal. Itai Erez nearly leveled in the 18', sliding into a gap in coverage in the box before firing a hard strike head-on that sailed just wide, while a dangerous looking header from Lasarte off a corner kick was blocked away courtesy of some more timely defending from the Bison.
Wittmer came up huge again on a pair of sprawling in the 35', showcasing nothing short of highway robbery on Lasarte and Mompremier with a pair of diving efforts to somehow keep the ball from crossing the line off of chances in close. Despite enjoying a 9-5 advantage in shots, FDU trailed 1-0 after 45 minutes.
The Knights decided to shake things up in goal, pulling starter
Sebastian Ferreira and replacing him with Capela to start the second, however the Bison struck again just four minutes into the second, going up 2-0 off a shot from a steep angle below the goal line.
Needing a spark from his bench, Roland called on the services of
Diego Arribas, and he did not disappoint.
Arribas nearly put one home in the 63', and while the effort sailed high, FDU continued it's attacking before eventually hitting pay dirt.
Corralling a long, lead pass from Arribas, Obhakhan gathered the ball in his feet before out-muscling a defender in the box and firing home a strike from eight yards out to cut the Bison lead to 2-1.
"Diego had a major influence on the outcome by assisting on all three goals. He brought energy and some quality passing which helped jump-start our comeback," Roland said.
Spurred on by the goal, Arribas continued to lead the Knights offense, attacking with gusto and generating close to a half-dozen different scoring chances. After Mompremier was stoned in front by another excellent save from Wittmer, it was once again Arribas who created the chance that tied things up for the Knights.
Taking the corner after Mompremier's effort bounced off Wittmer and over the back line, Arribas lofted a perfect ball into the box that was put home by a waiting Lasarte to tie things up at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.
This time it was the Knights who struck quickly.
Following a broken play at midfield, an outlet pass from Lasarte allowed
Ahu Obhakhan to corral the ball, darting between a pair of defenders and drawing them out before laying a perfect drop pass to Lasarte, who slotted over a perfectly-placed pass to a wide-open Mompremier who buried the strike for the game winner.
"Ahu did a very good job up top and got us going with a smart run and a nice finish," Roland said. Dani and Jacob helped create opportunities all game, and It was a fantastic passing sequence from Dani to Ahu to Diego to Fredinho for the game winner."
Arribas finished with three shots, including one one goal, as well as assists on all three goals on the evening for the Knights.
"Wojciech and Jamie provided us with a strong spine defensively, and Pat had a very good game in his first game ever for us at outside back," Roland said. "Itai was outstanding tonight in the middle of the midfield as well."
