Knights Serve Up 18 Aces in Victory Over Manhattan

WORCESTER, Mass. – Led by the swift serving of freshman setter McKenna Setterlund, the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team topped Manhattan 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon in their final match at the Holy Cross Invitational.

In addition to her 30 assists, Setterlund racked up eight service aces in the match, which is the most by any NCAA Division I player this season. As a team, the Knights compiled 18 aces, which is also the most by any team in the nation this season.

Setterlund's primary targets in the win were classmate Nataliya Rybakova, who tallied 10 kills, senior Taylor Wyckoff, who finished with nine and fellow freshman Magdalena Makismovic had eight. Wyckoff added seven digs and four block assists to her ledger in the win, while senior libero Carly O'Sullivan registered a match-best 20 digs.

A tightly contested first set saw the Knights (2-5) pull away from an 11-11 tie by scoring seven of the next eight points and capture an 18-12 lead. Over that spurt, Wyckoff served three of her new career-high five aces.

In the second set, the Jaspers (0-6) leapt out to a 13-5 led by three kills by Erin Hoener, however, the Knights showed their resilience and fought back to tie the frame at 17-17. Wyckoff and Makismovic supplied the firepower for the Knights, who also took advantage of four attack errors by the Jaspers.

With the game tied, the Jaspers regained control and scored eight of the final 10 points to even the match at 1-1.

Setterlund, who entered the weekend ranked second in the Northeast Conference in assists, came out firing in the third set with four straight aces.

Trailing 16-15 later in the set, the Knights went on a 6-1 run aided by two more Setterlund aces. Despite a late surge by the Jaspers, the Knights closed out the set with a kill by Makismovic and snagged a 2-1 edge.

The Knights came out flying in the fourth and final set of the day by running out to a 10-1 start. Sophomore Emma Liller sparked the early explosion with a kill and then teamed up with Wyckoff on a double block.

A kill by Rybakova followed by a pair of aces from Wyckoff highlighted the next stretch of Knights' points as they maintained control for the remainder of the set en route to the decisive victory.

Rybakova's 10-kill output was the second double-digit kill total for the Woodland Hills, California native, who leads the Knights with 2.11 kills per set this season.

Following the final match of the weekend, Wyckoff, who totaled 21 kills across the Knights' three matches, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

After five straight road matches to begin the season, next up for the Knights is their 2017 home opener this Wednesday, September 6 against Quinnipiac. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Rothman Center.
