HACKENSACK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team looks to keep their hot start rolling this weekend as they hit the road for clashes against Yale and Army. FDU will take on the Bulldogs Friday afternoon at 4:30 in New Haven before heading up to West Point to face the Black Knights Monday evening at 7 p.m.
LAST MATCH
The Knights earned their second consecutive win of the season in their home opener against Manhattan College Monday evening at University Stadium, defeating the Jaspers by a final score of 3-1. Fredinho Mompremier, Cristian Nunez, and
Ahu Obhakhan provided the offense as goalkeeper
Sebastian Ferreira earned his second win of the year in goal.
ALL-TIME SERIES
FDU is 6-1-1 all time against Yale, having met for the first time back in 2003. The two squads last faced off in September of 2015, a 3-1 victory for Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights are 1-2 all time against Army, with Fairleigh having dropped their last bout against the Black Knights 1-0 last November.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Friday's bout with Fairleigh Dickinson will be the first match of the 2017 season for Yale. Although the Bulldogs went just 3-11-3 last season, they boast an impressive freshman recruiting class that was ranked 23rd in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer recently, and return a number of key contributors from their 2016 squad. Two-time all Ivy League selection Nicky Downs provides both talent and experience from the midfield position, while two of last year's leading goal scorers in Kyle Kenagy and John Leisman also make their returns.
SCOUTING THE BLACK NIGHTS
Army is off to an impressive 2-0 start to 2017 as well, having scored impressive victories over both San Diego State and Stoney Brook this season. The Black Knights finished with an overall 9-8-2 mark last season, including a 4-4-1 record in conference play. While A preseason coaches poll had Army pegged to finish fifth overall in the division, the Knights will have to contend with preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year pick Zac McGraw in the backfield if they want to generate offense against a stingy Knights defense.
AROUND THE NEC
Although the season is still young, FDU is currently the only team in the NEC Conference without a loss on their record at 2-0. The Knights also lead the NEC in total goals with five, as well as goal differential at +4.
IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS
True freshman and former Virginia State High School Player of the Year
Jacob Labovitz earned his first point in a FDU jersey last Monday against Manhattan, assisting on
Ahu Obhakhan's second half tally that sealed the win for the Knights. Fellow freshman
Diego Arribas also earned his first point of the season with a secondary assist on the same goal. Redshirt junior transfer Fredinho Mompremier has scored a goal in each of his first two appearances for FDU in 2017.
