Three Knights Net Double-Digit Kills in Straight-Set Sweep of Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Three Knights recorded double-digit kills as the Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team swept Saint Peter's 25-12, 25-10, 25-23 at the Yanitelli Center on Wednesday night.

Freshmen Magdalena Maksimovic and Nataliya Rybakova each tallied 11 kills, while sophomore Abigail Strebig registered 10 kills in the victory.

Strebig's 10 kills match a career-best for the second-year middle hitter, while Maksimovic and Rybakova each reached double-digit kills for the first time in their young careers.

Fresh off of earning All-Tournament Team honors at last weekend's Titan Tournament, freshman setter McKenna Setterlund racked up 30 assists.

The victory also marks the first for first-year coach Andrea Nolan, who took over at the helm this season after spending three seasons as the team's assistant.

The Knights (1-3) started fast by jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first set which forced Saint Peter's to use a timeout. Five different Knights tallied kills over that stretch including a pair from Strebig.

The lead grew to double-digits for the first time at 16-6 as the Knights coasted to the 13-point, first-set victory. Over the course of the frame, the Knights committed just one attack error en route to a .364 attack percentage.

After the break, the Knights picked up right where they left off as they captured a 12-2 lead to begin the second set. Senior Taylor Wyckoff served eight points during that stretch as the Knights built a lead they would not relinquish.

Over that second frame, the Knights averaged at .424 attack percentage and 17 kills -- their best of the young season.

The third and final set was the most competitive of the night as the teams traded points until it was 12-12.

With Wyckoff serving, the Knights rattled off six straight points aided by one kill apiece from Rybakova, Strebig and sophomore Annabel Reyes.

But the Peacocks (0-5) showed their resilience by answering the bell with a 9-1 run, which resulted in a 22-20 edge for the home team. Four different Peacocks registered a kill over that scoring spree.

Trailing 23-21, the Knights sought out the sweep and tied the match via a kill by Makismovic and a bad set by the Peacocks.

Now tied at 23-23, freshman Jamie Rogers stepped up and put the Knights on top with a service ace. The Knights' captured the final point thanks to a Peacocks' miscue to close out the sweep.

In addition to the aforementioned offensive performances, Strebig added four block assists, Reyes had three, Wyckoff had two and Setterlund had one, while senior Carly O'Sullivan amassed a match-high 21 digs.

The Knights will look to continue their momentum into the weekend as they gear up for the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester, Massachusetts, which begins this Friday, September 1. The Knights open against Brown at 2:30 p.m. on Friday before facing the host Crusaders at 7:35 p.m. and closing the three-match weekend on Saturday against Manhattan at 3:35 p.m.
