MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team fell to Robert Morris 62-48 in the regular season finale for both teams on Monday night.
The loss coupled with St. Francis Brooklyn's win over Mount St. Mary's makes Fairleigh Dickinson (8-21, 6-12 NEC) the eighth seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament. Robert Morris (19-10, 14-4 NEC) wins the NEC Regular Season Title with the win and the loss by Sacred Heart at Saint Francis U.
Robert Morris will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, March 5 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament. It will be the third straight season that the two teams will meet in the quarterfinals.
"You have to give Robert Morris credit for coming to play tonight. They brought an 'A' effort tonight," said head coach
Peter Cinella. "I did like how we played defensively in the second half, where we did a better job of forcing turnovers and rebound. Our post defense was also good tonight."
Robert Morris scored the first nine points of the game and 14 of the first 20 to hold a 14-6 lead with 3:08 to play in the first quarter. The lead would get to 11, 19-8, by the end of the first quarter.
From the start of the second quarter on the Knights would only be outscored by three points.
The Knights got to within seven three times in the second quarter. The first instance came at 21-14 after
Amina Markovic connected on a pair of free throws. Following a Colonial bucket,
Madelynn Comly hit a jumper to make it 23-16.
Inside the final minute of the second quarter,
Brianna Thomas drove the lane and got one to fall to have the scoreboard read 33-26. The Knights seemed to have the momentum heading into the locker room for halftime, but Ana Niki Stamolamprou hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to move the lead back to 10 for Robert Morris with three seconds left.
Both teams struggled on offense in the third quarter – combining for 17 points. However, the Colonials were able to hold the Knights to only six points. Markovic scored all six points for the Knights – two field goals and two free throws.
The two free throws cut the Robert Morris lead to eight, 40-32, with 4:17 left. The Colonials would then hold the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and lengthen the lead to 15, 47-32, by the end of the stanza.
In the fourth, the lead got to as many as 17 for Robert Morris, 51-34. The Knights did battle back to make it a 12-point game, 53-41, with 4:10 to play after
Jenna Clark hit a jumper. Robert Morris quickly foiled the potential comeback with a triple from Stamolamprou on its next offensive possession.
Defensively, the Knights surrendered only 26 points in the second half to Robert Morris. The Colonials, however, did shoot 44-percent in the second half and 47-percent for the game; including 53-percent from 3-point range over the course of 40 minutes. The Knights were 1-of-13 from behind the arc and shot 41-percent despite that.
Stamolamprou led all scorers with 22 points. The senior added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Markovic finished with 21 points (7-of-11) and grabbed eight rebounds. Comly was the other Knight in double figures with 12 points (6-of-10).
