Women's Basketball Topped by First-Place Sacred Heart in Overtime

FAIRFIELD, CONN. -- In a game that featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team fell in overtime 68-60 to Sacred Heart on Monday night.

The loss is the second straight overtime loss for Fairleigh Dickinson (8-19, 6-10 NEC). Mount St. Mary's topped Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday after playing the additional five minutes.

Sacred Heart (14-11, 11-3 NEC) outscored Fairleigh Dickinson 16-8 in the overtime period. That was after the Knights held a 10-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we did a good job of controlling the tempo and had some good moments, but we did not make open shots late in the fourth and overtime," said head coach Peter Cinella. "Give SHU credit, they had their seniors hit some key baskets late in regulation and overtime."

The Knights had the ball for the final 1:07 after the Pioneers tied the game at 52 on a three from Adaysha Williams. Offensive rebounds from Lauren Francillon and Kiana Brown and a Pioneer foul gave the Knights multiple shots to win the game, but all three did not connect.

The three from Williams ended a drought of three minutes for both teams. Sacred Heart's last field goal before that came from Hannah Kimmel with over 7:30 to play in the fourth. The Knights did not score over the final 4:17 of regulation and did not connect from the field for the last 6:58 -- a Natalie Zamora trey.

A 3-pointer from Shelby Hickey from the wing was the first score of the overtime period and gave the Pioneers a three-point lead, 55-52, that they would not surrender.

Three minutes later, Amina Markovic drove down the right side of the lane and scored to get the Knights back to within one, 59-58, with 1:19 to play.

Sacred Heart answered with a triple from Erin Strock with a minute to play to bring the lead back to four, 62-58. The Knights would not get any closer as the Pioneers hit four free throws inside the final 18 seconds to put the game out of reach.

Kiana Brown and Markovic led the Knights with 12 points. Courtney Blankenship had eight points and seven rebounds. Lauren Francillon grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added four points off the bench.

Katherine Haines scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kimmel was also in double figures with 13.

Cinella added on heading into the final weekend of the regular season, "We had the ball to win the game in the fourth versus the first place team, and we did not play one of our best games. That tells me we have the ability to win on the road. We have to play a good to win on the road not just play solidly."

Fairleigh Dickinson took a 27-26 lead into the intermission after Madelynn Comly hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the right wing. Comly finished with eight points.

The Knights got 15 of their 27 first-half points off the bench. Brown had nine in the opening two quarters, Francillon had four, and Brianna Thomas added two.

For the game, Fairleigh Dickinson only turned the ball over 11 times and forced 14. However, Sacred Heart was plus-nine on the glass and made for field goals, three-point field goals and more free throws than Fairleigh Dickinson.

A road trip to Pennsylvania for clashes with Saint Francis U -- Saturday -- and Robert Morris -- Monday -- await Fairleigh Dickinson on the final weekend of the regular season.
