Women's Soccer Moves to 3-0 in NEC Play on Miseljic's OT Winner at LIU

BROOKLYN -- Viktorija Miseljic kept the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team undefeated in Northeast Conference play when she scored with nine seconds remaining in the first overtime period to beat LIU Brooklyn on Sunday.

"I am happy with this weekend," said head coach Eric Teepe.  "Today's game was a challenge. The good thing was that we learned something about ourselves."

Fairleigh Dickinson (5-7-2, 3-0 NEC) came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 on the road. The win is the first of the season for the Knights away from home and moves the Knights' win streak to three.

Miseljic got a pass from Andrea Garcia that played her behind the LIU Brooklyn (3-7-2, 1-1-1 NEC) defense as the clock ticked down. Miseljic tried to go the far post but hit the post and then controlled the rebound and placed it in the open goal for the win. The goal gives Miseljic five -- two game-winners -- in her freshman campaign and 13 points.

The Knights tied the game in the 58th minute when Elma Kolenovic knocked in her sixth of the season. The junior headed home a cross from Sofia Albertsson to the left post. Albertsson's helper was her second of the season and her team-leading 14th point.

LIU Brooklyn took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a goal from Marian Awad. Awad placed a free kick over the wall and into the left side of the net. The goal was first allowed by Fairleigh Dickinson in over 309 minutes dating back to Eastern Washington back on September 17.

Fairleigh Dickinson earned three corners when the game was tied in the second half. However, the LIU defense prevented the Knights getting a clear shot on goal from any of them.

The Knights, who came out sharper after halftime, held an 8-3 shot advantage in the second 45 minutes. Fairleigh Dickinson was threatening throughout the half but could not get connected in the final third, outside of Kolenovic's goal, to lead to more chances on goal and test Aline Allmann in the Blackbird goal.

Teepe continued, "We had a ton of chances in the second half, but we still need to be better in the final third. We talked at half about that it is just a soccer game. Teams that can stay composed have a better chance of winning, and the mindset was good from the start of the second half."

The Blackbirds thought they had an opportunity to win the game at the end of regulation, but it was called back for offside.

Before Miseljic scored to win the game, Jessi Reinhardt tried twice to win the game in the overtime period. Allmann stopped the first attempt and the second went over the crossbar.

On the afternoon, the Knights held a 21-9 advantage in shots but only eight combined shots made their way on goal. Allmann made three saves, and Amanda Fitzgerald made one.

Teepe added, "We have one game [next weekend], and it is essential for us to be able to find a way to beat Bryant. It is imperative to win when you only have one game. We have not clinched anything yet, and our players need to understand that."

Fairleigh Dickinson hosts Bryant on Sunday, October 15 in its next contest at University Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. next Sunday.
