HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team dropped its final home match of the season in straight sets, 25-7, 25-19, 25-21 to the Robert Morris Colonials at the Rothman Center on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the match, the Knights (5-20, 1-9 NEC) honored their two seniors,
Carly O'Sullivan and
Taylor Wyckoff, for their four-year careers with the team. In her final home match with the Knights, O'Sullivan recorded a match-high 18 digs giving her a career total of 1,405, which ranks fifth all-time in school history. Wyckoff's last game inside the Rothman Center saw the San Diego native total seven digs and one kill.
The Colonials (13-13, 7-4 NEC) were led by Taylor Lord and Emma Granger, who tallied 11 kills apiece in the victory.
From the first serve of the first set, the Colonials were in charge. With Granger leading the way, a 5-1 lead quickly ballooned into a 14-3 lead. The senior middle hitter, who leads the NEC in service aces was held without an ace in the match but kept the Knights off-balance with her powerful serve. Granger finished with just one attack error on 24 tries and totaled four blocks in the win. With the commanding lead in hand, the Colonials rolled to the 18-point, first-set victory.
The Knights seemed rejuvenated in the second frame and were tied at 6-6 aided by a pair of kills by sophomore
Erika Sullivan. Sullivan finished with eight kills on the afternoon. Leading 12-10, the Colonials' junior outside hitter Lord served five straight points to open up a seven-point cushion. Facing set point, the Knights battled back thanks to some swift serving by freshman setter
McKenna Setterlund, which closed the gap from 24-14 to 24-19 before the Colonials' ended the run and the set. Setterlund dished out 27 assists, recorded 12 digs and two service aces in the match.
The third set saw the Knights erase an early 5-2 deficit to pull within one, 15-14, thanks in part to five kills by freshman hitter
Magdalena Maksimovic. Maksimovic, who recorded 19 kills in last night's loss to Saint Francis U, finished with a team-high 10 tallies on Saturday. The Colonials answered the Knights push by scoring six-unanswered points to open up a 21-14 lead.
The Knights fought back valiantly with a 6-1 spurt, which featured three more kills by Maksimovic, however, the Colonials registered three of the final four points to close out the 25-21 win and the match.
