Volleyball Downed by Quinnipiac in Four Sets

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a road match to Quinnipiac on Wednesday evening. The Knights fall to 0-7 on the season.

The Knights fell in four sets. After losing the first two sets 25-17 and 27-25, respectively, the Knights battled back to win the third set 25-23. Fairleigh Dickinson could not roll that momentum into the fourth set, however, and fell 25-14 to close things out.

The Bobcats got on the scored first in the opening set but the Knights quickly tied things up, 3-3. The two teams traded points but neither team could score more than two points in a row. A kill by Abigail Strebig (Brookfield, Wi./Brookfield Central) tied things up 11-11 before the Bobcats scored four straight points to take a 15-11 lead, the biggest of the set. Quinnipiac went on another 6-0 run to take a 23-14 lead. Fairleigh Dickinson scored three in a row but the Bobcats closed things out on a Natalie Alechko kill.

Fairleigh Dickinson built a quick 3-1 lead to open the second set thanks to a kill from Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and back-to-back service aces from freshman Erika Sullivan (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove). The teams went back-and-forth, tying the game six different times until the Bobcats scored three to take an 11-8 lead. The Knights eventually tied the game at 16-16 and continued on to take an 18-16 lead. Two kills from Emma Liller (Germantown, Md./Northwest ) and a kill from Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) gave the Knights a 22-19 lead before the Bobcats scored five a row. Fairleigh Dickinson battled to tie the game at 25-25 but Quinnipiac benefitted from two attack errors to close out the second set.

The third set did not start out in the Knights' favor, as Quinnipiac outscored them 6-1. That forced Fairleigh Dickinson to take a timeout and regroup. Quinnipiac continued its momentum and eventually brought the score to 12-6. The teams traded points for several plays until the Bobcats scored three in a row to take a 17-10 lead, the biggest of the set. Fairleigh Dickinson used kills from Laton, Sabol and Strebig as well as a Quinnipiac attack error to score four points in a row, cutting the score to 17-14 and forcing a Bobcats' timeout. The Knights managed to tie the game and take a lead before alternating points with the Bobcats. The teams tied things up at 23-23 and the Knights scored the last two points to end the set with a win. Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) added the last point for Fairleigh Dickinson on a kill.

The Bobcats came out strong in the fourth set, scoring the first six points. Quinnipiac continued to build on its lead, bringing the score to 11-3. The Bobcats had all the momentum in the set, going on several runs and not allowing the Knights to score more than two points in a row. Quinnipiac scored three straight to stretch their lead to 24-13. Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) gave the Knights a point off a kill but they could not turn that into a run. The Bobcats ended the set and the match with a kill from Natalie Alechko.

Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) led the Knights with 10 kills and four blocks. Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) had three aces and 13 digs while Kirsten Trabert added 20 assists for Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Knights are back in action this weekend at the UMass Lowell/Boston College Tournament. Fairleigh Dickinson plays UMass Lowell on Friday night at 7 p.m. to open play.
