Women's Soccer Beats Stony Brook in Home Opener

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson Women's Soccer team came away with a 2-1 win over Stony Brook in the home opener for the Knights at University Stadium.

The win is the 11th straight for the Knights on their home field dating back to last season.

Raven Edwards got Stony Brook (3-6-2) on the board inside the first minute of action off an assist from Christen Cahill that beat Julie Prentice (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) to the bottom right corner.

"I thought [allowing the early goal] inspired us to raise our level [of play] and from then on we really dictated the tempo and rightfully got two goals. Overall it is a good theme to keep winning at home," said head coach Eric Teepe.

Dara Battistoni (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) got Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7) back level when she converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute after being taken down inside of Seawolves' 18-yard box. It was the three successful penalty kick in as many tries for the Knights this season. The goal is the second for Battistoni in her career.

Battistoni also played a role the second for the Knights in the first half. The junior and Jessi Reinhardt (Freiberg, Germany/Burggymansium) played a give-and-go at the top of the 18 that allowed Reinhardt to score her third of the season and give the Knights the decisive one-goal lead.

Stony Brook had chances to tie the game in the closing minutes of the opening 45 minutes but they were either pushed wide or high. Manuela Corcho had the best chance in the dying seconds but her header from inside the six went over the bar.

In the second half, Stony Brook fired 12 shots on Prentice in the Knights' goal and the freshman turned away all four that went on frame. Prentice was forced to make good saves on the four that did get to her to earn her first win of her career. Just past the hour mark, Prentice stretched up to poke a shot from Julie Johnstonbaugh over the crossbar.

Stony Brook had two quality chances in the final two minutes. A shot from Amy Thompson hit the crossbar and went out then Johnstonbaugh could not control a bouncing ball and put her shot over the net in the final 11 seconds.

The Knights return to action on Sunday when they travel to Fort Myers, Florida to face the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast.
